Tales of Malaketh: Ritual of the Blood Red Night - Part 1: On The Run

The discussion was cut off by the return of Misea, which was probably for the best. It seemed like Almira had been about to get heated, and the comparisons Glen had been making probably wouldn't have helped the situation. For whatever reason, the girl seemed to be a fan of vampires. Perhaps she'd heard too many stories of handsome vampire men stealing girls away, something that surely would be tempting to someone running from an unwanted path. Shaking his head, he started to turn away from the others to see if he could spot Mina when he felt a light pressure on his scarf. Turning, hearing her thanks, he grinned and lightly ruffled her hair. She just seemed so innocent, he couldn't help but feel gentle around her.

"You were right, don't worry. They're doing what they need to do to survive. Perhaps if we could find a way to work with them, all the fighting that has happened could finally come to a true end. And it's not as if humans can't be just as bad or worse than vampires. So don't let him get you down, alright?" He glanced back in the direction that Mina had gone before deciding to just wait patiently. "Do you want me to sit next to you, Almira? We could talk more about magic, if you wanted."

"Whether I stay out of it depends on how ghastly what you tell me is. I won't interfere with your trip, I'll even help keep her safe... but if she needs it, I will educate her along the way. Even with how staunch you are being, you must understand something is... wrong with all of this." Astrid retorted, following Misea as they entered the carriage, the handler taking the reins. Astrid herself moved into the back with the others, taking a seat next to the standing girl in the armour... had she gotten her name? Actually, there seemed to be a few she hadn't heard, most of the introductions had happened when she wasn't present.

"Well well, it seems we're about to get moving, no? Dearie me, I think I missed introductions speaking with Misea... how positively uncouth of me. My name is Astrid, what might you all go by~?" The Countess asked, looking over the gathered sellswords as she leaned back against the wooden bench, crossing her right leg over her left casually.

Seph and Almira were really hitting it off, it was a nice sight for whatever reason, Alex smiling a bit. She didn't share Seph's optimism, but perhaps things could turn better in future days, between vampires and human. At least becoming neutral again, right? Meanwhile... "Hmm? Ah." That was the woman that was tagging along, right? She seemed to be more than just a barmaid, for sure... well, as long as she wasn't an enemy, that didn't matter to Alex. "Name's... just call me Alex. Nice to meet you, Astrid." Alex nodded, taking a seat next to the woman. "It's going to be quite a ways to the capital... better get comfy." But sitting down for too long always sucked, left her sore.

"Uhm... S-Sure. If you don't mind sitting at the front... And next to Misea. She wants to keep me in sight at all times. Just in case..."

"I trust that won't be an issue~" Misea smiled, as the group finally collected a Mina, and the wagon went on its way.

Chapter 1: What Can go Wrong, Will

As the wagon pulled off the road, and through a small opening in the forest, Misea sighed. It was definitely time to make camp, the humans among them had to sleep, and Almira was getting a bit shaky. She needed something new to drink, she was too young and still growing, and Misea's own blood could only provide so much. "Well... I hope everyone is comfortable with sleeping under the trees. This looks like a good enough area to stop and setup a fire... Not that Misea would have anything to do with it, the brightness of the fire was enough of a bother during the day. Having it hit them at night would simply ruin their night. Someone didn't quite share their sentiments, though...

"H'okay!" Almira hopped off the wagon as they parked it in the small clearing, going about gathering whatever sticks where nearby, finding a tree branch fallen from one of the nearby ones and bringing it all into a pile.

"Gods, what a weird little girl... Astrid, come along with me for a moment." She'd wanted to hear all the of the details, didn't she? Misea headed off towards a pair of trees, far enough away that the fire wouldn't be a bother, but close enough to see Almira, if something were to happen.

Speaking of Almira... "Bwah! W-Wow, that's bright... And warm." With the spark of some flint and a small rock, she'd set one of the smaller twigs on fire, starting something going. They could get more wood if they needed it, but for now-- "Ah, r-right! Alex, can you help me find some stones? We don't want the fire to spread so we should put some rocks around it. I'm surprised it started so easily, though... I've only read about this sort of stuff." Almira had left the small pyre alone a moment, turning to the other girl, smile radiant in the night.

And here they were, a nice clearing.. large enough for the humans to have their fire... with it's foul warmth and light, and for it to be far enough away not to bother the less... sun-inclined of their group. Of course, there went Almira again... not only helping with setting up said fire, but seemingly enjoying the act of being so close to the damn thing. Just how odd was this girl? Shaking her head a bit, Astrid followed after Misea, getting a good distance away from the fire, looking over at the humans and Almira, just as the handler was.

"Go ahead, Misea."

"Mmm... oh, we're stopping?" Alex rose to attention, feeling a bit sluggish. She totally nodded off, didn't she? "S-sorry, rides make me drowsy." Alex gave a quick apology to Astrid, hoping she hadn't been a bother in her sleepy state. Now, it was time to prepare the camp... and Almira was already on it, wow. "Can't believe you read that on a book too. You sure know all kinds of things, huh? Though you could have asked me too, you know?" She chuckled, "But it's fine. Let's go find some stones, and if you see anything off, just warn me!" All sorts of creatures could pop up at night, after all.

"Yes... Well. The king has had her on cold vampire blood her whole life. I hadn't thought it anything but weird, until I found out about this ritual... He needs a pure blooded vampire, so that's likely why he's kept her away from human blood of any kind. I... I agree, that it's incredibly weird, it's not natural for her to be so secluded from what she is, but at the same time..." Misea sighed, placing a hand on their forehead, venting frustrations, finally.

"You know how, if a human doesn't eat meat for so long, and then tries to, their body rejects it? I'm incredibly worried over Almira. If she drinks human blood for the first time, and her body rebels... She's forty seven. Forty seven years drinking the same sort of blood, at least twenty drinking just mine, and it's... I'm scared, Astrid. I'm like a mother to this girl, I don't... I don't want any harm to come to her. So as much as I want to defy the king's plans, and have her taste for the first time... As much as I want that, I don't... I can't stand the thought of her getting hurt. Please, you have to understand." Pleading wasn't an expression Misea was used to making, but here they were, all the same.

"It's my first time outside the castle! Er, keep... I wanna do everything that I can. If I don't get away, they'll just stuff me back into my room, so. S-So a lot of this is really exciting for me." She'd already started picking up stones that looked big enough to surround the thing and make a tiny pit, wondering how quickly they could find enough. There weren't too many around here... "And, well... I've been reading all my life. I've had a lot of time to do so, so I've learned a lot... I-In theory. Just, not in practice. I wanna get to the practice part! And I just started my first fire! I didn't think it would be so easy~ Flint is really useful, huh?"

"Heh, I gotcha... when it's your first time being out in the world, no dad or mom to tell you what to do... it's great. You feel so important." Alex could relate to that, smiling as Almira had her fun, picking some few rocks as well --she wasn't gonna stop Almira from jumping at what caught her eyes--. "If it feels heavy you can give me some of your loads." So far it had been a rather calm forage, thankfully. Only the sound of insects and the full moon above them. "Always a nice time to be out when the moon is this bright... you get to see just a bit more." Night forests did have a nice hue to their vistas.

Astrid nodded alongside as Misea explained themself, as well as Almira's situation. She could understand their worries, but this...

"I understand, Misea. You've watched over Almira for years, you wish to see no harm befall her. But your comparison... I do not know if it is apt. While some humans reject meat after not eating it for a time, not all do. As far as severity, the worst I've heard of was a few days of abdominal trouble... and at the same time, human bodies don't reject things like vegetables after not eating them, even for a long period of time." Astrid began, reasoning it out as she went, finger pressed against her lips as she swayed to and fro absentmindedly.

"And yet you must understand that he will doggedly pursue her so long as she is what he needs. The ultimate solution to all this, if your hypothesis is correct, is to have her consume human blood. Become impure, at least to the standards his ritual supposedly requires. These guardsmen chasing our tails? I can handle them, you can handle them. But if this goes on long enough, Misea, we will encounter pursuit that we can no longer handle. You know it too, in your heart... the way to protect Almira is not to allow her to continue to be a piece on the King's board." Astrid continued, placing a hand on Misea's shoulder. The stoic knight she had known all those years... seeing them like this left such... odd feelings in her chest. Astrid had assured herself that crush had passed, and yet...

"Still, I understand you better now. I implore you, however... she needs this. Even if it's taken slow, step by step. Blood taken warm, from one of us, not the humans yet. Blood taken from the neck, or from the arm or anywhere else. Eventually perhaps a mix, anything to introduce her to it. Depriving her further is not the right answer, Misea."

Misea could only sigh. "You're... You're right. I hate it, but you're right. Why must you do this to me, Astrid? Come back into my life and make things frustrating all over again? Oh dear..." Finally back to a calm smile, Misea closed their eyes, leaning back against the tree they'd chosen to escape to. "I'll see if this group pans out. See if they panic when the truth reveals itself, and we're forced to run... Or see if they wish to stay for the ride. I've lived long enough to know that not all humans are afraid of us, nor willing to work with us... And many of them here seem quite enamored with Almira." It was rather cute, watching her walk about with that Alex woman, collecting rocks to keep a fire contained. "If I didn't know, I could swear she looks just like them."

Almira definitely was an odd one, no way around that. "You know that the sun barely hurts her? She even got freckles from it, she doesn't burn. It's no wonder that starting a fire doesn't bother her in the slightest... For a 'pure' vampire, she certainly shies away from so many of our issues. No trouble with sun, blood, or humans... What an odd girl." Another sigh, and Misea corrected their posture, standing up straight again. "My apologies for letting you see me so weak. That's no way for a knight to be, is it? Even one as ragged as I... I'll let her have a taste of my blood, warm, on the morrow. Maybe while all the humans are asleep, I'll be able to find time to talk her into it. Does that sound alright? As a start."

"This fire is perfect. Had we not already eaten at the tavern, I would suggest finding something to cook on it. Lots of rabbits live around here, so much so that many lords don't care how many you take. Would I hunt right now, though? No, I wouldn't, because it's too dark. Maybe tomorrow, when it's easier to see. I can fight at night no problem, but I've never hunted at night, and rabbits are very small, and anything bigger would see me in front of a magistrate. Anyway, let me take my seat." Glendwr sat facing southward, something his father trained him to do. Oftentimes, the South lay at the rear or on a flank, perfect places for an ambush. The sound of owls and cicadas made the night full of ambience, and eased any feelings of tension that were there earlier. He never liked the quiet, silence made things feel dead. Taverns, his father's men, and nature all had their own sound, and all of them brought comfort to him. Silence was, to him, the absence of life. There was silence before the shot, and before the raid, and he feared what would happen if it fell silent while he was escorting Mira.

"Now that's just unfair, Misea. You were the one who chose to indulge the affections and attention of a naive growing girl, all those years ago. If I was troublesome to you back then, it was of your own doing." Astrid replied with a pout, as Misea corrected their posture... at least she had gotten the knight to see the light, as it were. What barbarism, the King had proposed... all in pursuit of some lofty, yet foolish goal? Despite their conflicts, life would be so much worse off without humans... such a thoughtless pursuit would almost be laughable, if it didn't have such frightening potential to become a reality.

"Everything about the girl is strange...  with every new thing I learn about her, I'm more intrigued... she's unlike anyone I've ever known... and I've known plenty, human and vampire alike. Still... these humans seem a good group... most of them, anyway. The fellow in the compensating hat could go either way, but the others seem rather sincere and open-minded, if a bit fresh to combat... but what can you really expect? Veterans know that too good to be true always is... yet they also have their minds set in ways that will not change. For our purposes, perhaps fresh faces are for the better." Astrid commented, looking over at the gathering of Almira and the humans.

"If you need any assistance with her to move things along, do let me know. If she's been on your blood that long, she'll need to taste other blood before we can give her that of a human, if you want to remain cautious... which I know that you do."

Seph had remained up on the carriage for a little while the others started to set up camp. Almira had gotten a fire set up easily enough, and Alex was joining her in her search for stones. Rabbit hunting was Glen's focus and he'd settled down near the fire. The two older women had already gone off again which was pretty much expected now.

Jumping down off the carriage, they stretched and then leaned against the back of the cart, arms crossed. "I'll take first watch. The rest of you can sleep if you want. Nice to not have to sleep with one eye open like normal."

The comment about 'sleeping under the trees' hadn't initially registered to Wilhelmina as meaning quite the same thing the speaker may have meant it to. At first, she'd merely assumed it to have meant sleeping on the road, not at an inn, without a roof over their head. But as one by one people filed out of the carriage, none of whom were carrying tents or other such shelter, a cruel reality slowly began to dawn on her. Eager to fight it off, and hope against hope something had been overlooked, Mina began to purposefully and urgently, though not frantically, search the various nooks and crannies of the wagon.

Aside from the various weapons, tomes, and assorted other gear that had previously been shown, there was very little else of note that turned up. The metal case in the back, and while curious, it was certainly not of large enough size to contain the quantity of canvas or ropes she was looking for. In fact, the teacher's first assumption was that the chest simply contained more money, the other half of the funds promised them, presumably locked and secure. This notion wasn't dispelled until she had pushed it aside, and the lack of any metallic jingle coming from within, as well as its somewhat surprising lightness, very much gave it away that the contents had to be something else.

Here was a pretty puzzle. Before Wilhelmina realized what she was doing she had knelt down close to it, tucking her legs up beneath her and a little off to the side as she did so, biting her lip lightly as she leaned in close for a better look. Would it be a warded lock, pin tumbler? Maybe combination? As she realized what she was thinking, Mina had to chide herself and break it off immediately. These people had been beyond generous, and one couldn't simply go breaking into others' belongings because it might be a fun challenge to see if they could, and because they were curious what lay beyond the lock. A little ashamed of herself, she slid it back into its original place and pushed herself back to standing, brushing dust from the front of her clothing before finally following the others to the rear of the cart and disembarking.

"No tents, nor tarps, nor shelter of any kind," she grumbled a little to herself, turning to Seph and asking, "Is that typical when traveling this time of year?" Presumably he was more well versed in these matters.

"You were too young, and by the time you weren't, I'd been tasked with taking care of the princess. I'm probably too old to fit into your interests now, so I decided to let sleeping dogs lie... But you're back again, so I'll stay on my toes. I will say, I didn't quite expect you to be so... Strong." Misea smirked and chuckled, watching Almira set down a pile of rocks to start setting up the fire's pit.

"We'll see how they fair. I expect tonight's going to get a bit noisy, so--"

"I'm not sure if noisy is the right word for it. I was hoping we could deal with this quietly."

Misea tensed up and took a large step away from the voice, sword out in the same motion, ready to strike. Her eyes narrowed at the source, of course... "Heathcliff. Didn't take you that long to catch up to us. I suppose you hope we'll give up, do you?"

"It would save us quite the bloodshed, yes, but knowing you Misea... You'd give your life for that girl. Good to see you as well, Astrid, I'm surprised you managed to find them so quickly. Judging by your lack of a report, though, you aren't here to help us capture them. Unfortunate, we could've extended your control; even the king knows how unorthodox you are when it comes to your... 'Protection', of the border. Not that it'll matter for long, since--" Heathcliff barely managed to bring his own sword up in time to stop Misea's strike, scowling right back at them, with a hefty, fang bearing smile. "Then it's like that! Surround them, men!"

"It's too dark? Huh? I can see everything just fine. Especially with the moon out, the whole forest is nice and bright. There's a deer, just down that way," Almira pointed out, as she set out her rocks, before turning to see if she could see anything... Else... "U-Uhm, M, Mmm-Misea-- Oh!" Turning to try and get the attention of her handler, Almira realized the situation they'd suddenly gotten themselves into. Quivering hands drew her sword, backing up towards Alex. "Uh, w-we, we sh-should get, ready... The... Th-The guards caught up, to us...!"

"Then it's like that! Surround them, men!"

Almira backed right up against Alex as several armed guards approached through the trees, coming just into the light of the fire, weapons drawn.

Heathcliff broke his lock with Misea, jumping back a bit, poised to strike if necessary. "Kill the humans, capture the princess! I'll deal with the Countess and our traitorous knight!"

"Cat's out of the bag and run down the street, Astrid! Prepare yourself!" Misea wasn't quite sure they could take Heathcliff alone; the Countess' aid was incredibly necessary. While they were one of the king's knights, Heathcliff was captain of the guard. And much younger than they were...

"Princess, we'll spare your new friends if you just come along with us. You don't want to see them hurt, right?" Another vampire stepped forward, spear in hand, smirk on her face. "Besides, traveling with humans? You know they'll all turn on you as soon as they find out you're not one of them... Oops~"

"N-No! I'm not going back, Luciel! Dad's crazy, what he wants to do is--"

"For the good of us all! Now stand back, else you'll get hurt while I deal with your unfortunate allies..."

"Alex, p-please help!" Almira's eyes turned towards the girl and begged, her mouth agape showing the unfortunate truth, two tiny fangs all but unmissable.

"Typical? No not really, too high of a chance for rain. But they were on the run, so it's entirely possible they simply forgot..." He trailed off and stiffened, reaching for the gun at his side. They weren't alone, and at the shout, he spun around, quickly realizing just how bad their situation was. Or he thought he had. It was made a lot worse by a few simple words. "You're not one of them..." Vampires. And Almira... So Misae and Astrid too most likely. That explains... something I'm sure. A lot. But what does it change? As he hesitated, their conversation from earlier fought to the top of his mind. The three they had been traveling with had been normal. Friendly even. Almira especially had seemed so enamored with him. He couldn't help but think about the quiet thank you accompanied by a tug on his scarf. Did it really matter?

Without quite realizing what he was doing, he brandished the small gun and fired a shot at the lance wielding vampire. It was likely pointless, but it proved a point. "Sorry, friend. You're better off running while you can. My family has taken down plenty of your kind, and I've promised to protect Almira. So run or die, I care not which, but you will not be taking her with you if you run." This all would have sounded much better if they weren't surrounded, but maybe it would somehow work.

Glendwr sees a sizeable group approach from the South. Too well armed for bandits, too few for mercenaries. Then he saw the skin and the teeth. It was vampires, all right. These weren't like any group of vampires he would've ever thought he'd encounter, especially not in these numbers. They had an agenda, and it seemed it involved Mira. Why would a human lord like Mira's father hire vampires to do a mercenary's job, unless-" he cut his thought process short to prepare for what was sure to be a long fight. He quickly loaded his revolver full of bullets and drew his sword. "This is a bad day to be you, bastard! My blood isn't spilling today!" He looked at one of his coat pockets. If those bullets aren't silver, I'm getting my money back if I live through this. If I don't, then I won't have to worry about it for very long, at least.

"Not that you look any older than you did back then, Misea. Of course-" Astrid began, cut off by the arrival of their pursuers. Well, at least the night wouldn't be boring...

"Why hello there, Captain. I must say I was aghast when I heard the plans for young Almira from Misea here... you do know how fond I am of humans, after all... honestly, did the King think I would simply lop off their heads without so much as letting them speak? I suppose he was rather desperate..." She replied to Captain Heathcliff, casually removing an axe from her belt, and casually twirling it about in her hand, giving Misea a knowing glance.

Wilhelmina hadn't been wrong, the lad confirmed. Sigh. Well, not much doing about it. It seems like it had been just the other day she'd been joking with Lucy about how society was changing, how more frequently than in days past, women and men would see each other asleep, before marriage no less. Now it seems likely she would be joining those numbers. Ha! Who would have expected? Still, if anybody tried anything, at least in this group the women outnumbered the men, so there was that, at least.

"I see," she answered, as Seph trailed off, missing entirely the fact that he seemed to stiffen and go on alert. "Suppose I'd better tend to the horses at least then, everybody else having run off to one thing or another."

Now, Mina didn't really know much at all about handling horses. Just enough common sense that leaving them hitched up to a wagon all night without letting them free to stretch, at least a little, wasn't proper. Perhaps she'd a few of the basic ideas right, rub them down, maybe give them a brushing, things like that. But she really just wasn't quite prepared when, immediately upon getting one out of the harness--coincident from a shout coming from nearby, and perhaps because of it--the animal spooked, kicked and bolted.

"Oh bother!" That wasn't how things were supposed to have gone down. At least Wilhelmina had been swift enough on her feet to avoid taking the kick, but as she moved to chase after the horse, as it exited the circle of firelight, she nearly bumped chest to chest with an armed intruder. Not good, not good. She was only vaguely aware of the shouting going on behind her, though a few words carried and stood out clearly. 'I'm not going back,' and 'Please help,' both of which indicated the small group was already going to have to earn their pay.

...Right then. Well it was a good thing Mina had been so attached to her new gifts. She'd made a bit of loop in the sash about her waist that she'd stuck the small staff through, and the tome was just tucked in nicely on the other side, no loop needed. So at least she wasn't going into things empty handed. ...But caution indicated she better start backing up toward the fire and the others. Especially as she caught a closer glimpse of the foe she'd nearly plowed into. There was something unmistakable, clearly sticking out in the pleased grin that arrested her attention. Fangs.

"We've got trouble!" Incredibly redundant, no doubt, but she felt the need to shout anyway.

"Really? I can't make out very far when the sun settles... but I know some people have trained for that kinda stuff... and I guess being in a keep made you better used to the dark, huh?" Alex let her stream of thoughts go without much of a filter, trying to spot out the same deer Almira had pointed... ah, was that it? She could make the moving silhouette, but not much else. Could be a large wolf for all she knew.

Quickly, the mood had changed to dire. It only took a few words from Almira. The guards. Alex drew out her sword, moving closer to the girl. Already she could make out voices in the darkness. A command to surround them was issued. "Oookay, scratch the rocks for now. We're gonna get back to the others, I'll watch the front and you--" They were armed, finally showing their faces as they left the covers of trees and bushes, Alex moved in front of Almira without a second thought. Shoot, that's a lot. They were all... bizarre, not how she'd expect usual guards to be outfitted.

As one stepped up and voiced their offer to Almira, the obvious seemed to hit Alex hard in the head. The assailants weren't human... and neither was Almira, by correlation. It made Alex wonder how she'd never taken notice of Almira's fangs before... they were so unimposing, but they were there for sure. What... what was she going to do now?

"Alex, p-please help!"

Her pleading eyes stirred something fierce in Alex. That girl in front of her was a vampire, but could she really find it in herself to abandon her now? Vampire's business weren't her business... but Almira looked so desperate, hopeless. "Damn it..." Cursing under her breath, Alex took Almira's hand. "Come on. We can't let them surround us two, let's go!" Alex wasn't going to live down leaving a girl that could be her little sister on her own. She was going to fight vampires for the sake of Almira.

"The king figured one of his best would do their job. I see you're just as much of a bleeding heart as Misea is. Your loss! Men, leave these two to me! I'll teach them what it means to betray their country." Heathcliff was confident, and no slouch. It wouldn't be an easy fight.

"Thank you...!" Almira followed Alex immediately, hiding behind her as best as she could, which only angered Luciel further.

"She's a vampire! We kill your people for sport, she'll do the same; hand her over!"

"No! You're wrong, I, I wouldn't, a-all of these people, they're--"

"Screw it, attack! Leave that girl to me. Get in my way, will you!?"

"Oh, did he say that about me? And here I thought that the King and his courts considered me an eyesore~ How touching... and the two of us? My my, Captain... how boldly overconfident of you. I assure you... one of the King's best is more than enough for you, Heathcliff~" Astrid taunted, replacing her axe back onto her belt. If Heathcliff intended to single them out, may as well move to outreach him. Drawing her lance into a defensive posture, the Countess began to move closer to the Captain of the guard, the weapon's shaft and head swaying to and fro erratically as she danced towards him beneath the moon, hips swaying to oppose her weapon, the entire display a visual cacophony.

"I'll occupy him... tend to the Princess and the humans." Astrid noted to Misea as she moved in closer to the knight, in order to get into striking distance, lunging forwards as soon as she had closed the gap.

"Very nice thrust~ it is good to see that the King's most stunning knight... former knight, I suppose, still has their bite. I could have taken him though... still, it was dealt with quickly enough to likely not be a bother~" Astrid remarked, clearing her lance of Heathcliff's blood with a twirl, before turning towards the rest of the battle. How would the humans fare, in the time it took them to regroup? Hopefully well enough, this group held such promise.

"Now then... shall we show the young ones how it's done... old friend~?"

Creatures of the night... they were at a clear disadvantage. Alex herself wasn't the most experienced sellsword already, but when it came to vampires, she was completely clueless. How poorly could things go...? Very, but the group was short of options other than standing their ground and fighting. Right now, Alex's best option was to play by ear. Her strength was dragging things out, and hopefully something about the vampires could be revealed in that time. ...Yeah, seemed like as good a time as any.

"I'm going in!" Raising her sword, Alex charged one of the vampires, the first in her sight.

Alex to (6,10), attack vampire 3 with her iron sword!
