Tales of Malaketh: Ritual of the Blood Red Night - Part 1: On The Run

What was it that had roused Wilhelmina from sleep? Was it the enticing smell of freshly cooked meat? Was it the low bustle of voices, mingled with other sounds of morning activity? No, in all likelihood the primary culprit was the jabbing of a thousand pins and needles, running all along her left arm, as after some slight change of position the flow of blood began to return to it. Or maybe it was the pain and stiffness in her neck, crying out for attention?

Ahh, yes, she'd fallen asleep sitting up, in the wagon. Such discomfort was to be expected, and no more than she deserved. To be honest, Mina was a little surprised she hadn't woken to shivering, as the cool morning air did its best to steal away any warmth it could from her. Curious about this, she peeked open her eyes a little, and met with two answers on that subject; one of which jogged her memory, while the other was a bit of a mystery. During the course of the night, she'd ended up hugging the other girl, Alex, close to her, to better share their body warmth. But that would have had very limited effect, if not for the blanket, smelling vaguely of horse, that had been draped over the both of them. Someone had taken some pity on them, it seemed.

Unconsciously letting out a yawn, before realizing she would probably wake the other from her slumber, the teacher quickly tried to stifle it, as best she could, and to gently disentangle herself from redheaded sellsword. Eventually managing success she stood a little gingerly, and stretched widely before stepping down from the carriage, blinking several times as the harsh morning light pierced deep into the remaining veil of sleep. Finally, Mina let out a full yawn, no need to interrupt it this time, as she tottered over towards the fire. She'd left the blanket on the other girl, and a replacement source of warmth sounded most excellent.

"I wouldn't worry much about that... so much as human officials and nobles claim this land as their own, it's still within my domain. Silnynon nobility fear the borderlands, they don't send officials, soldiers... not even tax men. For those brave enough to live in these plains, it is a haven free of bureaucracy... the local villages would find a better time petitioning protection from me than any of their own country's officials, all the way out here." Astrid replied to Glendwr's worries with a shrug. Despite him asking what it was, he seemed to settle on the correct answer rather swiftly, so no need to confirm.

"Let them sleep, for now. Last night was more harrowing than I expect most of you are familiar with, and those tracking us will scarcely move during the day. We have some time, and they will awaken of their own accord." Astrid continued, just as Mina came over to the fire. Well, time to see whether she had merely been shocked in the moment or held a grudge... patting the spot beside her, Astrid beckoned the woman over.

"Good morning, Mina. Come, enjoy some breakfast, won't you?"

"Knowing her... She'll likely manage a tan before she gets anything of a burn. You'd think not having human blood in her would work the opposite way. Maybe it's just something to do with her body? I don't have a clue..." Almira's uniqueness aside, Glendwr sure had some... Choice remarks, didn't he? Astrid addressed them, and it seemed they had another guest.

"Ah, good morning, Miss Mina. Apologies if you were confused about your waking attire, I couldn't help myself. I hope it wasn't too warm with the extra layer. Never could tell these things." She seemed no worse for wear, so that was for the best, then. "Why were you and Alex sleeping together, anyway? Was it truly so cold last night? Or perhaps... Well, that's your own business~"

Whatever the case with their lovely healer, Glen had suggested something rather helpful. "Ah, yes, Glendwr, if you could fetch Miss Lua? Almira has run off to wake the lad, and I assume with Miss Mina stirring, Alex will follow shortly. I'd like all of you accounted for before I go over our next course of action, and hopefully before the sun hits its peak. I'd like to get some things done in the next village, but... As I am one of everyone's favorite night dwellers, even these robes won't keep me safe for too long. The sun can be a cruel keeper."

Covering her mouth as she started to let out another yawn, Wilhelmina nodded almost automatically in response to Astrid's suggestion. The food smelled pretty good. Deer, was it? That made the most sense, given the circumstances and the size of the cuts.

"Mmm, yes. Eating first before heading off to find that river and freshen up sounds like the right choice, though I'm sure I probably look something awful first thing in the morning, after all night on the road. Do forgive me," Mina apologized, rolling her head to one side then the other lightly, trying to work the kinks out of her neck as she made her way over to the offered seat.

Just as she settled in, and had been reaching for a bite, Misea solved the remaining small mystery of the blanket. Mina started to wave, and was going to reply that of course it was fine, and not to worry about it, but then Almira's retainer branched off and implied something rather embarrassing. All the blood in her body must have rushed to her cheeks then, and surely she was sporting the most rosy flush one had ever seen.

"Why I just... it was rather... and I mean... what!?  I would never... we don't even know each other." Mostly incoherent rambling as she tried to protest. She was a proper lady, and finding herself accused of impropriety was rather novel and uncomfortable. Pulling her knees to her chest as she sat, Wilhelmina tried unsuccessfully to shrink into a ball. "...Is that really," a small sigh, "...I would not have expected such cruel capers from you, Miss Heide. Joking about at another's expense like this would've maybe felt natural coming from the countess, but you?"

"...Buh." Alex never said she was an early riser, but she was hoping to not be dead last. She could hear some bustle from outside, as she slowly rose... her neck definitely felt strained. Oh, she'd slept in the carriage. Somebody had bothered to cover her with a blanket, but she had still gone to sleep dressed heavily... how cumbersome. She'd need a shower, after eating something, of course. Groaning, Alex pushed herself out of the carriage seat, and slowly out of the carriage itself, turning her neck... good. A nice crack after an unfortunate sleep... at least she had slept at all. "Hmm... morning...." Everybody seemed far more ready than her, oh dear. Alex couldn't afford looking like a slacker. "Ah, what, what should I do right now?"

There was that Miss business, again... Should they clarify? Mmm... I don't especially care. It's definitely amusing, they keep calling me a woman and I might believe myself to be one. Misea let things slide with a slight chuckle instead, allowing themselves a grin. "Pardon me if I offended. It was a easy jab, and I can't help myself, sometimes. Even I like to tease beautiful women, you know? I can't let Astrid have all the fun." Saying that would likely have an effect, as well, though this one was definitely intended.

"If it truly did bother you, I extend my apologies. I would never consider you to be such a loose woman, I promise." They'd only just met, after all. How could Misea make such a claim with only a day between them? "All that said and done... Nice of you to join us, Alex. Nothing to do right now, just eat. The sun is out, we'll be safe for a while. Just sit down and eat, the both of you. Last night was definitely hard on us all." Hopefully they weren't adverse to deer...

Glendwr finished eating and rose to wake the new addition. He didn't want to frighten her, but he certainly didn't trust her, given her ignorance outstripped even his. Who knew what she was capable of. "Hey, wake up. You don't wanna be left behind, and we certainly don't want to leave you to yourself. So why don't you just join the fun and grab some breakfast, huh?" Glendwr stood impatiently over her, waiting for her to stir.

Ah... food was ready. "Good, thanks for that." Alex nodded, still trying to get things up to speed. Misea was talking something strange with Mina... suggestive even? Alex couldn't put together the context but it seemed like hitting on. Did Misea like girls? Well... whatever floats your boat. "Alright, well... I'll help myself, then." She didn't have much of an opinion, especially not during that hour of the morning. Better to spend time on filling her stomach. Deer was fine, game meat had its charm when it was well done... hmm, that part looked good.

Seph had managed a deeper sleep than normal, but still light enough that the warm poke on his cheek was enough to stir him. "Mmm?" Opening his eyes, he looked up and saw a different looking Almira than the one he had been expecting. "Oh, uhm, hello. You look... different. A-ah, not in a bad way, just... Are you feeling ok?" She seemed pinker than she had been. If one ignored the small fangs, she almost looked human even. What had happened the night before?

She likes to tease beautiful women? Meaning she thinks... It was hard for the already embarrassed Wilhelmina to flush any redder, but heavens, that didn't stop her from trying. Her ears were positively burning, and the coals of the fire were suddenly the most interesting thing she simply had to direct her gaze towards.

"O-Of course," she stammered slightly. "So long as it's just harmless teasing, I suppose I'll have to forgive you." Thankfully it was just a one-pronged attack at this point, if both the vampires had teamed up on her, Mina was afraid to imagine how that might turn out.

At least the comments weren't repeated upon the arrival of the other party in question though. If Alex had heard what had been insinuated, that would have been even more awkward. "Ah, good morning," the teacher directed to the armored girl. It felt a little barren a greeting, and she half wanted to follow up with asking if she'd slept alright, but at this point that would just be inviting more trouble. Instead Wilhelmina simply settled for actually trying some of the venison and getting a start on breaking her fast.

"Oh! This is delicious," she exclaimed, turning to Astrid. "Did you prepare this all yourself?"

"My my, look how red she's gotten~ I do wonder, does such a reaction mean you're of such a persuasion, Mina dearest? Wonderful, if so~" Astrid chimed in, snickering at the teacher's predicament... hmm, with Alex arriving...

"As for the deer... not all by myself, no. Misea helped with the skinning and separating after I hunted it down. And Alex dear, sit down, sit down~ We were just discussing how positively adorable you two were, snuggled together in the wagon~ I had thought I would be the quickest to act in that regard, but it seems I was mistaken~"

"Oh, uh... A, Astrid let me have some of her blood... It was warm, and... I'm used to drinking blood cold so, I... I guess, my body readjusted, for it...? Or something? Out of everything I've read, I haven't read much on vampire physiology..." Almira blushed, which would've surprised her, if she could've seen her face, standing back up and smiling. "But I'm glad you think it's a good look! 'Cause, you said, not in a bad way, right? That means it's a good way? Or a neutral way... O-Over thinking! Come get breakfast!" Almira motioned for Sephtis to follow, hopping back over towards the campsite...

...as Astrid laid into Mina, Misea almost coughing up a piece of breakfast. "A-Astrid, please, you take teasing a step too far. But... I, must clarify, Miss Mina, if you are of that persuasion, just to... Mmm, never mind. Perhaps that's worrying a bit too far ahead. In any case! While you all attack breakfast, I have plans to discuss. It seems the princess has roused our late member, it shouldn't take them more than a moment to get over here... In any case, we'll be stopping at the village of Rolan to restock. Please take a look at this section of the map."

Misea unfurled a sheet from beneath their robes, pointing towards a specific section of it. "We've come from Tarask, and this is where we are, right now. There's a bridge near the fork in the river, that we can cross to reach Rolan. From there, we should be able to afford another horse, and you can spend all your payments on whatever it is you'd prefer. Weapons, pleasantry, food, supplies... I'm still paying the lot of you the other half once we reach our destination, so don't fret if you decide to be a bit less tight on your purse. Any questions?"

"O-oh. Right. That makes sense I suppose. Drinking blood cold instead of warm, sure..." Seph slowly stood up, nodding. "Yeah, it's good. Nice. You just look more, well, err, alive. I guess." That probably wasn't the right thing to say. Oh well. She still seemed happy. Following after her, he arrived at the tail end of the conversation, but he managed to pick up enough to know what was going on. "Some supplies might be nice, though to be honest, the weapons you had are serving well enough. Is there anything that you or Astrid will need, given you can't exactly join in on the shopping?"

"Guh..." Lua opened her eyes slowly, peering up at her awakener with an annoyed frown. Oh, it's tree-boy. Still, breakfast was breakfast, and she was never going to turn down free food while she was out of work! "Sounds good." she yawned at him, slowly pushing herself to her feet and heading towards the fire. ...It would be human food, right? The thought that it could be anything else made Lua pale slightly and feel a little wobbly, but the scent of fresh meat managed to calm her nerves somewhat.

Doing her best to avoid any kind of eye contact with the vampires, she grabbed the largest piece of meat she could spot, and then scurried backwards as if she'd been bitten. Still not comfortable with this. As she bit into her breakfast, Lua felt like she never would be. She cringed and did her best to ignore the conversation about Almira drinking blood, and to focus on the rest of the conversation. "Am I getting paid for this...?" she murmured quietly. Probably not? But she could hope.

"P-Persuasion, you m-mean..." the flustered Wilhelmina almost squeaked, then decided it was best not to have the countess clarify after all. Quickly shaking her head, she futilely implored, "Can I persuade you to just, show a little mercy here?" If things carried on like this... and now with Alex present? Her sole solace was that she had just swallowed the bite of venison she'd been chewing, or else she surely would have choked.

Heaving a heavy sigh, Mina mounted an inevitably useless defense. "You know how riding in a carriage can be sometimes. And it just felt wrong to wake her." Not that she'd been the most bright-eyed or bushy-tailed at the time either, for that matter.

Thankfully, by the grace of all the gods she prayed to, and quite probably most of the ones she didn't, Misea only briefly followed up on Astrid's avenue of attack before moving to change the subject. Following their course along the map intently, Mina only had to muse briefly before offering her thoughts on how to spend some money.

"My first order of business, after helping to get that horse replaced of course," Wilhelmina certainly remembered having made that offer, and promising to escort Almira around town while she did so, "...Will be getting ahold of a tent. Maybe a grate or some camp stove or something, help make cooking a little easier than hanging things over an open fire. And after that, hmm. Some light runes, maybe? To spread around at night, and maybe prevent another incident like before, or at least give us more advance warning." There would probably be a few more items, there always were, once you got started shopping.

"To have the lot of you turn on me, even after you set me up, Misea... how ghastly from the both of you. Honestly, it's not my fault our lovely miss Mina becomes so adorably flustered at such well-meant teasing... however could I help myself?" Astrid replied, feigning an expression of extreme hurt, and in her dramatics, accidentally dislodged her cloak, a low hiss escaping her lips as the sun branded her skin for a scant few moments before replacing it.

"Ornery bastard, you." The Countess accused, pointing towards the morning sun just over the horizon, before letting out a sigh, and pulling a coin purse from her side. A rather hefty number to be certain, Astrid picked out about three-hundred gold worth of coin, before passing the sum over towards Mina.

"I do need a few bits of clothing for the road, but I wouldn't have you buy such a thing for me of your own pocket... this much should suffice for that purpose, no? Sadly this side of the border, most merchants won't accept a writ signed by me..."

"Huh? Ah, um, I... did I sleep on you, Mina? Crud, I'm sorry." Alex totally did. These things happened when you slept in carriages... how unfortunate. "You shoulda punched me or woken me up, I don't wanna be a burden like that!" Honestly, what a mess... and it seemed the situation had left Mina's face a tad red, she shouldn't have let that happen! Goodness... at least, the teasing was on her. "I thought you guys put some cushion under me... not that I'm implying--look, you're pretty huggable, Mina, but don't let people take advantage of you like that!" That was a bit of a slip of words, hopefully Mina wouldn't think she was being called fat! "And yeah, Misea, once we reach Rolan, anything you need to buy you can let us do it, too... provided you're not buying the whole city!" Really, the journey there seemed to be the hardest part. Now... getting to eat would be best, Alex sat down eagerly, glancing at the meat... Do vampires need to eat too, or do they just need blood? Huh...

Almira watched as everyone spoke, taking in what was being said. She didn't really get why Mina was blushing, or why Astrid was speaking with that lilt in her voice. Misea clarifying something? Clarifying what? This was strange. At least she could follow along the topics of clothing and shopping. "I'd like some new clothes, if we can get some, Mina," she piped up, having taken a small bit of the deer, starting to dig in after mentioning that. She'd been 'fed', but Almira couldn't hold back with that smell assaulting her nose. It was inviting and delicious~

"Yes, clothes, would be for the best. I can't go around everywhere dressed like a Gorletsian knight, can I? And were we to have an extended stay somewhere, having me wearing this robe all the time, the invited suspicion would be immense. I'd like to avoid that if possible. Ah, and a hat of some sort, or a tuque? Ears, of course." Misea pulled the robe back slightly, showcasing their slightly pointed ears. Taking a glance at Almira-- My God, she doesn't. Have I honestly never noticed? I'd always thought her ears were... Just what are you, my dear princess?

Astrid handed Mina money for clothes, and... Misea smirked, not correcting the countess' advance. MIna's surprise would facilitate that. "Miss Lua, if you're going to be sticking with us for the journey, I've got six hundred gold's worth with your name on it, and another six hundred when we are. How does that sound? Hopefully worth your while should you have to join us in battle." That all seemed settled... Hopefully. "I'll provide you the gold for the horse, Mina, and you can use what Astrid's given you to get clothes for the lot of us. I'm sure Almira can help you pick out some sets~"

Glendwr looked at the woman he woke up. "That's not all, of course. Take anything you think you might need off the wagon, because you'll be even more of a liability without it. Anyway, What should I be doing right now? I can secure provisions from the village, or I can stay and watch over the camp. Unless you trust we can hide this thing? Which I honestly doubt. Either way, I'll do whatever you need me to. Even watch miss Lua over here." Glendwr went over to the wagon to dig out weapons for Lua. "Do you have a preference for weapons or does it not matter, really? You don't seem the type to use weapons, but that isn't an option."

Seph snagged a bit of the deer meat for himself, before sitting down nearish Almira but not directly next to her. While she was nice, he figured she could stand to get to know some of the others in the group too. Glen was talking again, and Seph couldn't help but let out a snort of laughter. "Way to offer someone else's property while also insulting our newest member. As for watching the wagon, after last night do you really doubt that these two can't handle it? They may not be able to take their cloaks off, but I suspect they could still find a way to protect the wagon if needed."

Shifting his attention to Lua, Seph nodded at her. "Good to know you'll be sticking with us for now though. I suspect more hands will be useful in this adventure. Is there anyone that you need to let know that you'll be going away for a while? I suspect we could probably find someone willing to deliver a letter in town if so. Obviously you probably shouldn't tell too many details about what we're doing but I'm sure someone cares about you enough to want to know why you're gone."

Lua glanced at Misea, a little confused, not actually expecting anything to come from her comment. Vampires are still really creepy, but how else am I going to get home? She realised, making a small pout, that she probably wasn't. Well, if I'm gonna risk my neck for something, it should be something that pays well. "Okay." she nodded, ignoring the part of her brain that screamed no. "I'm in."

It seemed like a good deal. Dangerous, but hadn't her father always told her that it was necessary to take a few risks? If I die here, this is entirely your fault. His advice was the reason Lua was in this mess to begin with, and now she needed it to pull her out of it. This realisation hadn't put her in a particularly great mood, and she quickly glared back at Glendwr as he so rudely implied she'd be a burden.

"I left them running away last night, okay? I'm not helpless. I bet that I have more practice with a bow than you have with that stupid gun." Never mind that most of that experience had been gained terrorising her local wildlife. He didn't need to know that. "Bows and light tomes both work out. Just grab me something." She shrugged.

Lua figured that she was a smart girl, and she'd be able to roll with whatever, and she smiled at Seph for seeming to actually care. I am sooo glad that there's someone here who seems sane and doesn't have vampire teeth. ...At least, she hoped that he wasn't hiding vampire teeth under there. Her smile wavered, but for the sake of her own wellbeing she was going to choose to believe that he didn't.

"I don't have anyone I need to tell." It wasn't like she had anyone to leave behind, considering those bastards her father had hired ditched her... She was never going to get over that. "Don't worry about me unless there's something biting at my neck." she tried to laugh, but it felt horribly forced and died out quickly. God, what have I gotten myself into?

Astrid's mock theatrics would probably have been a lot more amusing if Wilhelmina wasn't still recovering her posture, or maybe if someone else had been the target for the whole affair. Then there was Alex getting somewhat flustered herself, and apologizing for things she really needn't be. The comment about how huggable she'd been was something that, in ordinary circumstances, probably would have made her feel really good. As things were, though? Just more fuel for the flush fire. And 'a cushion', really? Trying to dismiss her concerns, Mina lightly waved a hand and told her "It wasn't a burden, not really..."

She may have kept going, but all thoughts of that disappeared upon the countess's next request. Having deftly grasped the hand Mina had been waving about, the vampire had pressed some gold into her palm. And, hoooo boy, that was a lot of money for 'a few bits of clothing'. The modest teacher may have been more understanding if it was supposed to be for picking up a set of armor, or something; warrior goods always tended to be marked up considerably. That said, given one's life was on the line when using them, paying a premium for quality there was understandable. But... this much gold for day-to-day affairs? The coins felt almost oppressively heavy in her hand, and surely it was her imagination, but Mina fancied they were getting hotter and hotter. She almost wouldn't be surprised to find that after all was said and done, they'd have burnt her--leaving angry red, disc-shaped marks on her skin.

"I, uh... right," Mina managed, still in disbelief. If she was buying for Misea and Almira as well, there was still far too much to spend, but it was starting to approach not entirely unreasonable. She could scout out several very fashionable ensembles, complete with accessories: hats, tinted-glasses, gloves, parasols, and whatever else the vampires might need to help shield them from the sun. Wilhelmina fully expected there to be funds leftover even after that, but, maybe it wasn't entirely outlandish, and better to be overprepared than have to turn around and come back to camp to be sure they had enough... right?

"Sorry, I was just a little surprised," hello understatment, "that you'd need half of what we were advanced just for clothing," she paused to nod her head, and bring the hand that wasn't holding the money to her chin. "But my first impression hadn't exactly considered all of your... special needs, and that it was indended to cover the whole lot of you. I'll see to it you all won't be disappointed."

The logistics of the trip were becoming somewhat complicated though, with the additional of this new goal, on top of the original one of replacing their missing animal. No matter which they went to buy first, it felt like the previous purchase would interfere at least somewhat with the second. Not only that, but there was now bound to be quite an amount to carry: at least three outfits, maybe more. Perhaps it would be best to solicit one of the men to come along, either to help carry their bags or to return to camp with the horse once it had been selected and paid for? It couldn't hurt to ask. It seemed that Glen fellow was offering to look after a new arrival, one who Mina hadn't entirely noticed before, so...

"There might be a bit much for the two of us to carry back alone though. Comfortably, at least. Sephtis, if you wouldn't mind accompanying? Or... are you any good with animals, Alex? If you wanted to help look after the horse once we've picked it out, that might also be a good idea. I know you've been offering to aid with the shopping."

"Oh, dear..." Perhaps leaving the correction out was a mistake. "Mina, Astrid is... Used to a much more lavish lifestyle. Since I'd rather have you not fretting over this, use that to buy the horse, and use what's leftover for clothes. That should be much more reasonable for you, right? Should be able to find a horse strong enough to help pull the wagon for around two hundred... A hundred for simple clothes, that's much more reasonable for the three of us, no?" Hopefully Astrid wouldn't object, but it was clear to any of them that Mina was out of her depth.

"I'd been able to volunteer myself to come along, but if Alex and Sephtis have no issues joining your little expedition, then you should be fine. I'll keep watch over the wagon with Astrid. And don't worry, Glendwr, I see no need to hide it. It's not as though there's anything amiss with our wagon, it's as mundane as they come." What an odd fellow... He fought well, but his concerns were so grandeur, or simply inapplicable. What made him think like that?

"Worry not Miss Lua~ None of us will be doing any biting, unless asked. Though I can't see many of you being that sort of adventurous. And I do not doubt your capabilities, it seems most around here are at least able to wield a weapon properly. Your contributions will be a great asset." That all settled... "Whenever you've had your fill of deer, I suppose we can head on out. I do wonder what the place is like, I've studied your maps, but never have I been this far beyond the border... It's rather exciting."

Almira simply sat and ate, giving curious glances to Lua and Glendwr specifically. They sure were weird people... But that made them fascinating.

"Yeah, of course. I figured I was kind of offering that anyways by asking if they needed anything, but sure, I can make my joining official." His tone was light, clearly not offended by having his comments missed by Mina. "So outfits for Misea and Astrid, plus letting Almira pick out her own presumably. A horse. Glen, Lua, did you want us to pick up any weapons for you while in town? Or any other supplies of course. If you two are staying back here, it means you can't shop on your own." They didn't exactly need weapons, not with the supply that their employers had provided, but it was still something worth asking. Seph didn't really expect to find anything to buy for himself, but it was always nice to look.

Glancing over at Almira, Seph decided to voice a question that had crossed his mind a couple of times since the vampires had been revealed. "So do you need to eat normal food or is it just that it seemed good to you, Almira? I had assumed you just needed blood and wouldn't eat other food, but clearly that's not exactly the case."

"My aren't you a pushy one. Still, if you insist on those things, I'll oblige you." Glendwr pulled out a bow, a quiver of arrows, and a light tome from the wagon. He brought all of them over to Lua and handed them to her. "The only thing I need is a replacement bottle of brandy for my empty flask. Actually, you should probably get some oil, because I have a feeling we're going to have to burn a lot more bodies before we reach Hrolt. I don't like it, but it's much cheaper than using good brandy." He looked at Misea. "I suppose. Maybe I'm assuming our foe is smarter than they are, but we cannot afford to underestimate them." Glendwr looked at his ammo bag. Having only used 3 shots, he felt no need to get more bullets for now, not to mention he hadn't even used his sword.
