The annoying side of liking Nintendo games

No one's told me that (closest was my mom thinking that video games were a phase).  But I'm known for my glare, so maybe that's why people don't question my taste in hobbies.

No one's ever told me that since I never did tell anyone, except for two good buddies who also enjoy Nintendo games. 

I don't really expect anyone to care about it much or at least be understandable if they did find out I play Nintendo games. 

 

Except for a friend who I have no doubt will call me a child if he found out about it. He's already called me that for liking animation once so....

Yeah, it was the video game crash in the 80's.  Before Nintendo you only ever had very small, independently developed games on home consoles like the Atari 2600 (literally just a bunch of tech students and interns messing around, making games of varying qualities) and everything else was on the arcades.  Nintendo was, as far as I know, the first organized group that made a platform and supported it themselves with their own games - the first form of a proper development and publishing team in gaming.  And after that, you had the bit-war rivalry between them and Sega, which ended in the era of the Playstation, N64, and Dreamcast.  Nintendo and Sega were massive in the gaming world, and they dwarfed all other 1st Party competitors.  And that doesn't even count the fact that they were pretty much pioneers for a number of the big genres - hell, Super Mario Bros is still a better designed game than some attempts at platformers out there these days, which really says a lot.

Yeah, it's that way too.

Though most of what I remember about playing the game online was all the kids on microphones.  But that might be because interacting with a kid in an M-rated competitive shooter is always a bad thing, and so the bad experience may have been hyper inflated in my mind.  And this was back when I played Modern Warfare 2, so I honestly have no clue what the online community is like today.  But the experience left an impression on me, so I imagine the same is true for lots of other folks.  Not that I'd ever say CoD is a "kid game", but I'm also not the kind of person to trash on someone's tastes unironically.  I'll only sarcastically say people have shit taste for liking CoD.

Perhaps I had written off CoD in other ways, though.  Playing Modern Warfare 2 online was one of the most miserable experiences I've ever had gaming.  I sunk tons of hours into it, and I was always angry and frustrated doing so.  I hardly ever performed adequately, my K/D ratio was a decimal below .5, I had to put up with a bunch of fuckwads who frequently slurred, and it kept me from doing more valuable/fun things with my time.  I almost think I might have had an honest addiction, because I sure as hell didn't keep returning to it because it made me happy.  So I'd say that's why I might be extremely harsh when talking about any of those games.

All I ever get usually in terms of crap for liking nintendo shit is the usual stereotyping of all nintendo fans for being absent minded, overhyping losers who fight over everything.

It seams most people have come to accept nintendo a lot more nowadays as a lot of the internet and gamers, at least in terms of my generation, have grown up playing either the DS or the Gamecube. Well, that's what I assume that's the reason is anyway.

and that's the whole point right there: it's not about "maturity", but rather about "mentality".

older generations usually have different ways of thinking and approaching things, 'cause the trends were different back in their days.

nowdays some trends have changed( for good or worse, depends on the subject ), yet some stereotypes still remain.

i would say people from the 90s probably have a different approach to gaming in general compared to people from the 70s/80s, but then again it all boils down to personal taste in the end.

parents watching cartoons with their kids is alright, however there's also the case of grown men past 30 years watching stuff like "My little pony" for their own joy.

also,  there's the other way around: you wouldn't normally want a child to witness a gory horror movie or porn movie, so having age ratings on a specific subject/category actually does mean that it's for a specific audience only. in those cases, common sense needs to kick in.

 

i know these are quite extreme examples, but it was only to give the general idea.

while you can have "family friendly" for everyone, you can't have the other way around with stuff for an adult audience.

I see less and less of this sentiment after the Switch gained traction.

During the Wii-era? Yeah, "kiddy!", "casual!", "not real games!". 

Same with their handhelds, since "3DS? Doesn't even have a second stick, lol". 

Nintendo cleverly marketed the Switch to young adults, while maintaining their family friendly image with their evergreen titles and catering to the hardcore gamers with clever 3rd party partnerships (even if it's just ports like Diablo or Doom). 

In Poland, I would say that the Switch is the first Nintendo device, after maybe the Gamecube, widely recognised as "legit" - even local news outlets write their 'best of lists' full of indies and RPGs. 

In general, what also contributed to the change of mindstate reg. Nintendo games is that 2D games are as popular as ever and other companies also ride on the retro-nostalgia wave: Crash, Spyro remasters have been very successful here and peeps don't mind colourful games as much - the brown and grey PS360 era is long gone.

TBH the only person I know that play COD a lot is my 8 year old cousin, so that' why I see it as a "kid game" despite its content.

And your story is why I don't like online play. I'm not a fan of how hyper-competitive it can get.

It's why I generally disdain competitive games.  I mean, I have nothing against competitive gamers or those who play competitive games, but I just did not enjoy that environment or the mindset it all put me in.  My closest friends have wanted to get me into Fortnite with them, but I just don't have much interest in practically any online games.

Though I'm fine with couch competitive games like Smash.  Except when I play against someone I keep winning against, which definitely happens a lot as I get older since most everyone else doesn't want to devote their free time to video games.

I'm fine with Smash too, since I still have fun playing against the AI. Plus I don't have Switch Online

I'm not into Fortnite either. One Fortnite gamer I've watched always seems like she gets harassed and has to deal with racist/homophobic/hateful kids or just assholes. I'm more of an introverted person, and I'd rather not hear another's grating voice. Plus it's a FFS which is a genre I think is fun, but I get over a shooter pretty fast.
