So how often do thieves get bows? Because I think it would be interesting if those were promoted to Assassins like they did in Awakening.

Fates is the only game I know of where Thieves wield Bows as their main weapon.  Normally it's Swords.

I'm very glad to see a move away from the rather limiting reclassing used in the games up until now. I always found it irritating when a unit was perfect for a certain class stat-wise, but had no way to get into that class...

The designs are still a little hit and miss for me, but I think that's normal for any game. I'm glad that they're okay with experimenting and aren't letting the series stagnate. Story-wise, like a lot of people around in the Fates pre-release days, I'm not getting my hopes too high.

Based off the dialogue we've seen, I'm really looking forward to seeing what the characters are like. I know it's not a whole lot of evidence, but everyone seems to be reacting to Byleth/Sothis's abilities in a realistic way (surprise) along with clearly defined characterisation (Claude being more thoughtful, Dimitri wondering if it's a joke). Small things like that make me think they've got a good handle on what the characters are meant to be like, and so they'll be consistent in supports, cutscenes, and battle quotes.

The sprite for Myrmidon DOES appear to be different than the sprite for Mercenary so perhaps it is more specialised and a more advanced class. This makes me wonder about the classes available to Edelgard in the direct footage though...none of these 4 classes appeared in that reel, yet all 4 seem to be more advanced on further thought but are called base classes. What is actually going on here.

I kind of assumed the opposite quite frankly. Since you begin with no weapon specialty as a commoner/noble, it'd make sense that advancing through the classes would allow you to progressively specialize more., hence why some of the base classes are good with a wider array of weaponry. It's a tree with its branches spreading outwards, like... well, most trees. I suppose.

My guess with what we currently know was that the Edelgard roll we saw was actually her tier 3 options.

Edit: Pluuuus Edelgard needed C axes to become a Bandit, while Caspar only needed D rank in one of the three(apparently).

Brigand required a C Rank in Axes.  Fighter required a D Rank in Axes and something else.

Right, Band-I mean Brigand, my bad. Also you can see that Caspar has two D ranks out of three written in red, which I assume means he didn't have those, yet his rate of success was still 100%, so to me it looks like you only need one of the three.

Also I think I recognize the character for bow on the ranks, so the third one is likely fists.

Mercedes's hair got whiter. Not sure what color I prefer.

Definitely lighter, makes her look more angelic and pretty - the main reason I'm picking Blue Lions <3

Vincent's translation is up, so now we know that Dorothea's starting class is a commoner, and Caspar is a noble. Other known nobles besides the main three include Bernadetta and Linhardt.

The heck?  A commoner with a hat like that?

Bernadetta? A Noble? Odd.

Exactly. That hat is too cool (if not jarringly anachronistic) to be a commoner hat. The injustice!!!

So here's a screenshot of the weapon shop, and there appear to be more spears than swords available (Maybe because you joined the Blue Lions?). Some of the weapons are also greyed out, which I don't really get because you have more than enough gold to purchase them. Some weapons also have the same name as another weapon on the list, except with ten more uses and a 3 in the second category. Does anyone know what the second category says?

What are the cheap and durable weapons called? They don't look like Slim or Bronze Weapons

The sword costing 260 is called a Trainer, while the lance costing 280 is called a Practice Lance. It looks like training weapons will be this games' version of bronze weapons.

Kinda odd that English translations are kinda inconsistent, am I right? (That is despite their uniform Japanese name) But then again, among the Killer weapons, we have the Killing EDGE.

Also, looking back at that screenshot, Lances have 10 less durability overall than their sword counterparts, while axes have 5 more durability than swords. Weird.

From the economic perspective, Lances will have the highest demand for the following reasons:

  1. Among the weapons in the weapon triangle, it is the only weapon with cultural significance.
  2. Balance of might and accuracy.

This is despite the sword having more expensive materials.

Lances are arguably the best weapon in the traditional Weapon Triangle anyway (as much as it pains me).  Thought that was worth noting.

Neat little detail I noticed.

The back of Edelgard's axe has a Mitsudomoe on it. The Mitsudomoe, for those who don't know, is a symbol on Shinto shrines, especially those dedicated to Hachiman, a god of war. It's also pretty common in samurai clan crests. It's also closely associated with Amaterasu, one of the Sankishin and one of the most important kami in the Shinto pantheon.

And this got me thinking. Amaterasu also had two brothers, Susanoo and Tsukuyomi (the three of them are actually triplets). With Claude and Dimitri being the other two houses, I wonder if these three are meant to be parallels to the Sankishin. Or maybe I'm just overanalyzing and Kurahana just put it in there as a bit of flair

By the way, about the three stars thingie. You know, these:

ErhG6XV.jpg  O9ywbMX.jpg

I can't help but notice that these are two characters from the Black Eagles, aka what we now know as the more magic-inclined house, with both of them being bad at Faith magic and only one of the two being talented in either. Doesn't make too much sense. However, the stars in both cases are in magic categories, so... maybe that's what they represent?

Can't quite figure out why a single one wouldn't have been enough to show that, though... plus they look like empty emplacements for stars rather than actual stars. I can only guess what that means.

That's my take on it too.

At 4:07 in the Nintendo Direct video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OwUB8gf5Ac , we see Edelgard taking an exam, which requires an Intermediate seal (so likely, second class change out of three). The classes shown there are all different from the four basic ones seen there. The Fighter/Warrior from the first class change has access to bow, axe and gloves. The Intermediate set has Archer, Brigand and Thief, so a specialist for each weapon type.

The same apply to Monk versus Mage and Priest. The Monk for the first class has both magic types, then you specialize into either Mage or Priest for the second class. Basically the inverse of the traditional Fire Emblem experience. It might generalize again some more on the third class change, though.

Oooh, I didn’t notice this! I definitely prefer the darker hair, but she still looks good!

Edelgard’s skin was slightly lightened. Dimitri was given thicker eyebrows and a cute little smile. Hilda’s head was widened a bit. I wonder what other characters got updated designs?
