Three Houses: Jeuxvideo Interview with Developers (80+ Hours per Route, Koei Tecmo’s Involvement)

The on-going Japan Expo in Paris has been the source of some recent Three Houses information.

Toshiyuki Kusakihara and Genki Yokota, who came for the Three Houses live demonstration, were interviewed by Jeuxvideo. I am unfamiliar with French, but fortunately, machine translations are pretty good (unlike how they are for Japanese).

To begin with, they mentioned how this is the first home console Fire Emblem since 2008’s Radiant Dawn, which was released on the Nintendo Wii.

They discussed Koei-Tecmo’s familiarity with tactical simulation like games, such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Nobunaga’s Ambition to name a few. Saying that their passion for the genre, along with them handpicking developers who liked Fire Emblem to begin with, was part of why the project has gone so smoothly.

Intelligent Systems managed the artistic direction and game design while Koei-Tecmo did the programming.

The folks at Jeuxvideo compared the calendar system to Koei-Tecmo’s Atelier franchise–how you progress through the game while following the calendar, trying to prepare yourself for what the game will throw at you next.

Next they go into the differences between the Monastery and My Castle (from Fire Emblem Fates).

Yokota: The My Castle system was interesting because you could build it up yourself. But the ambitions we had with the Monastery were much larger and harder to achieve using a similar system. We wanted to give this feeling of shared life; while you created your own My Castle from scratch, in Three Houses, it is already established. The characters have lived there for years and, for them, it’s a place of life that they can call home. So it was designed this way to create that kind of mood. Read more

Three Houses: Gameplay Tidbits & Concept Art from Japan Expo Demonstration

During 11 am local time, Nintendo France held a masterclass for Three Houses at Japan Expo in Paris, featuring Toshiyuki Kusakihara and Genki Yokota from Nintendo and Intelligent Systems.

If you’re curious, you can watch the footage by rewinding their day 2 stream.

Anyway, for the most part, they showed off things we’ve seen–namely a bit of monastery exploration and the King of Beasts battle. This time, they played the game in French, with Japanese voices.

One cool thing you can do is expand the monastery mini-map, while you’re still roaming around. This helps you to locate where you are and places/people of interest, without needing to exit the screen to view the full map.

We’ve known that Raphael can be recruited if you’re not teaching the Golden Deer. His exact requirements are a high Frc stat and Cuirassier skill level. I’m clueless with French, but apparently these are Strength and Heavy Armor (via Azz).

If you don’t meet the requirements for now, there is a fourth option “Mission Assistance”, which lets you borrow the student for one month only (via FuranSuwa). However, like recruiting, we don’t know what the limitations are.

At some point, they hover near the amiibo Gazebo, aka the Pavillon amiibo in French. Sadly, they didn’t show it off. But according to the developers, if you scan in Fire Emblem amiibo, you can unlock classic player phase music for the auxiliary (optional) maps (via Cysx).

Three Houses: Live Demonstration to be Shown at Japan Expo in Paris

Ahead of Three Houses‘s launch on 26th July, Nintendo France will be showcasing a live demonstration of the game at Japan Expo in Paris on 5th July, starting from 11 am (local time).

Featured is an adorable illustration of Edelgard, Ingrid and Lysithea playing with one of the dogs from the monastery. Apparently, you can’t play with dogs in the actual game, so it’s a bit of a tease, but oh well–that’s what your imagination (and this artwork) is for!

As for the demonstration itself, it will be presented by Toshiyuki Kusakihara and Genki Yokota, who serve as the Chief Graphic Designer and the Director of Three Houses respectively. Florent Gorges (translator and author) will be interpreting.

Currently, it’s not known how long the demonstration will be and whether it’ll be available to watch online. I’m guessing it’ll be around 30 mins to 1 hour long, otherwise it’s probably not worth advertising. Attendees should head over to the Nintendo stand (Hall 6 No. B674) if they want to watch.

Please note that the game will not be available to play at the event.
