Avatar: Back to painting again, Shigure?

Shigure: Hello, Father. I didn't hear you come in. I'm sorry... I know this is no time for artwork. We are at war, after all.

Avatar: That's not why I asked, Son. I wasn't trying to criticize you. Honestly, I feel bad for you. In a different time or place, you might have become a world-famous artist.

Shigure: That's kind of you to say, but I'm not so sure about that.

Avatar: Your paintings truly deserve to be seen. I wonder if there's a way to show off all this work to other people...

Shigure: What do you mean?

Avatar: Hmm... Wait, that's it! I know what to do. We should throw a solo exhibition and display all of your work!

Shigure: A-an exhibition? I could never do that. Besides, our troops are on the advance. The setup alone would be much more work than it's worth.

Avatar: It doesn't have to be such a grand affair. We just have to rent a tent and announce it to the troops and villagers nearby.

Shigure: B-but it seems so vain to reserve a whole tent just for my personal use.

Avatar: In trying times, it's important to find a way to quiet one's mind. This show could be a very welcome break from hardship for everyone.

Shigure: I'm not sure...

Avatar: I don't want to force you to do anything. What do you say?

Shigure: OK, fine... We can give this exhibition a shot. The idea makes me a bit anxious though.

Avatar: This will be the event of the season! We should get started right away. I'll head into town to recruit volunteers. Good-bye, Son!

(Avatar leaves)

Shigure: Thank you, Father.

Shigure: Hello, Father...

Avatar: Hey, Shigure. Say, is something on your mind?

Shigure: Well... You've done so much to make this exhibition possible. I just wanted to say thanks.

Avatar: No need to thank me. The villagers deserve all the credit. They're all on board because they can't wait to see your artwork.

Shigure: O-oh, I see...

Avatar: Son, are you feeling nervous?

Shigure: Of course. But mostly I'm upset because my last painting isn't coming together...

Avatar: You mean the new piece that you're making just for the event? While I would love to see a new work from you, time is running short. If it's going to be too much trouble, you may want to think about completing it later. Does it really need to be in the show?

Shigure: I promised myself that I would finish it. Everyone has worked so hard to pitch in. I want them to know how much I appreciate all of their hard work. That means the exhibition must be great.

Avatar: I understand, but don't overwork yourself. All this effort will be pointless if you make yourself ill.

Shigure: I'll be careful. Thank you, Father. I should return to my easel.

Avatar: Yes, of course...

(Shigure leaves)

Avatar: I wonder what the subject is for this mystery painting. I can't help but be curious...

Avatar: Shigure's big day is finally here. I wonder how the exhibition is going. I should take a look inside the tent. Hmm... Wow! Look at all these people. This crowd is spectacular! From what I've overheard, his work seems to be going over quite well. Thank the gods. This event appears to be a smashing success. Wait a minute... Where is the man of the hour?

Shigure: *pant*...*pant*...

Avatar: Shigure, why are you winded? Are you just now arriving? The exhibition has already begun. How could you be late to your own show? You're supposed to be the host!

Shigure: Sorry about that, Father. I had to stay up all night to finish up my painting.

Avatar: You stayed awake all night just to finish up some art?!

Shigure: Y-yes, I did...

Avatar: I told you not to overwork yourself, right? Even if you hadn't completed this final piece, there are plenty of works on display. Look around. See all these smiling faces? These people are happy because they love your work. You almost ruined the show because of your carelessness.

Shigure: You don't understand. I promised myself that I would complete it, no matter what. I made this because I'm thankful for everything you've done for me, Father.

Avatar: What?! Th-this is your mother...and me...

Shigure: That's right. I painted a portrait of you two.

Avatar: So this is what you've been working on so tirelessly?

Shigure: Indeed, Father. My love for you and Mother cannot be measured. You brought me into this world. Without you, I never would have been able to paint. So I wanted to put all those feelings into this portrait.

Avatar: Shigure... Th-thank you... Thank you so much...*sniff*

Shigure: F-Father, it hurts when you hug me so tightly... Hahaha.

Avatar: I'm lucky to have such a wonderful son like you, Shigure.

Shigure: I'm very lucky too!

Avatar: Son, there's no time to talk. We have to put this handsome painting where everyone can see it!

Shigure: Sure, OK... It's a little embarrassing, though...

Avatar: Why, because it's personal? This is clearly the finest piece in your exhibition. It would be a shame if everyone couldn't enjoy it.

Shigure: You're right, Father.
