Kana(M): Hey, Papa... I wanna ask you something, if you're free.

Azama: Ah, hi there, Kana. What's the matter?

Kana(M): Well, it's about Mama... It seems like she's always treating me like I'm a child.

Azama: What's so strange about that? You are a child, after all. Don't try and tell me you're actually older and now you want a bigger allowance... I was there when you were born, and I've kept careful track of your age.

Kana(M): No, of course not! I just mean I'm not as much of a child now, and I want to help out more. But whenever I ask to help, Mama just tells me to go play with my friends instead...

Azama: Ah, I see. You want to be able to provide more for her and be relied on.

Kana(M): Right! I want to do things for her! Do you have any ideas for things I could do to make her happy?

Azama: Hmmm... Usually, I'll collect some rare wildflowers in the forest or prepare a nice meal. She always tells me how much she appreciates the thought and effort.

Kana(M): Hm...

Azama: What's wrong, Kana? You still seem unsatisfied...

Kana(M): I was just hoping for a ton of ideas for how to make her really happy. Oh, I know! Let's make it a contest, Papa!

Azama: What do you mean?

Kana(M): We'll have a contest to see which of us can make Mama the happiest! Between the two of us, we can think up all kinds of ideas for making her happy. When Mama thanks us for something, that counts. Whoever is thanked the most wins!

Azama: Interesting. A friendly competition between father and son? Sounds like fun. Very well, Kana, I accept your challenge. Remember, though: you are facing the man who won your mother's heart. You are truly dreaming big if you think you can do better than me. It might be a little childish, but I will not pull my punches in this competition.

Kana(M): That's fine, Papa. I want to win for real, so you'd better try hard!

Azama: Heheheh. All right. May the best man win.

Kana(M): Hey, Papa! I'm doing really well in our contest. What about you? How many times has Mama thanked you for something?

Azama: Oh, she's said it a lot. I've been showering her with flowers and treats. Here, I made a tally of all the times she's thanked me.

Kana(M): Oh wow! That's a lot of notches! You're really doing this many nice things for Mama?

Azama: Of course! Why would I lie about helping out your mother? Don't feel intimidated, though—I'm sure you've helped her a respectable amount.

Kana(M): Hmph... Well, I'm not going to feel defeated! I kept track of all my nice deeds, too. Here they are!

Azama: What's this...? You've got the exact same number as I do? You're...surprisingly good at this.

Kana(M): You bet I am, Papa! And I'm gonna beat you, too! I don't have a job to go to, so I can commit all my time to being helpful. I'll stay by Mama's side all day if I have to! She's going to be so happy.

Azama: That does seem like an advantage... Just out of curiosity...how are you helping her?

Kana(M): Mostly I've been trying to help out around camp! I spend each morning making arrows with the fletchers. Then, at lunch, I slice the bear meat and hand out food to the soldiers. Oh, and at night I make sure the mounts are all fed and outfitted for the next day. Plus I do a bunch of other little things whenever I have the time!

Azama: Pfft, is that really all it takes to make your mother so happy?

Kana(M): Yep! She's thanked me a lot for doing all those things!

Azama: Heheheh... Well, good job. Listening to you now, you're sounding so grown up and responsible. I never thought I'd see the day where you were tripping over yourself to do dishes. It makes me realize that maybe I was treating you like a child, too...

Kana(M): Hehehehe! I've been working really hard! I think I can do anything!

Azama: Can you, now? That's good. I'm sure Avatar was pleased with how good a job you were doing, too.

Kana(M): Hmm. I just realized something. Whenever I finished up a chore, Mama would never thank me. She mostly kept telling me I was doing a good job.

Azama: Oh, I see. And you were counting those, weren't you? That explains your score!

Kana(M): This just means I'll need to help her even more tomorrow! I won't lose, Papa!

Azama: Hmph. This might still be closer than I expected...

Kana(M): *grumble*

Azama: Hey there, Kana.

Kana(M): Hi, Papa...

Azama: Hey now, what's with the long face? Are you done enjoying your victory in our contest the other day?

Kana(M): I'm still happy about that, but... I was helping Mama again, and she told me that I shouldn't work so hard. She said I should spend some of my free time playing games with friends. She's still treating me like I'm a child! Wasn't I helpful?

Azama: Oh, that's what is bothering you? There's no reason to be sad, little man! I know your mother appreciates your help!

Kana(M): But...but she said that I should behave more like a carefree child...

Azama: Of course you should. You're still a child, after all! Also, obviously Avatar is happy that you're growing up, but she's also sad.

Kana(M): Why would she be sad?

Azama: It may be troublesome to raise children sometimes, but... It's also sad when you realize that they are growing up and won't need you.

Kana(M): I don't really understand, Papa...

Azama: To be honest, neither do I. But that doesn't mean it isn't true. I have an idea for you, though. Keep helping your mother, but sometimes try to avoid having to do a lot of work. It'll make her happy to see that you're still her child.

Kana(M): B-but...

Azama: Something wrong? Most kids—and parents—love to avoid work when they can.

Kana(M): No, that's not it! It's just...I don't want to feel like I'm a really lazy person.

Azama: Hahaha, that's all you're worried about? Your mom and I will love you no matter how lazy you appear to be.

Kana(M): Papa...

Azama: We know you're growing up and that you want to be reliable. But for now, enjoy being the kid you are!

Kana(M): OK... Thanks, Papa! I'll think about everything you've said!

Azama: Good! Now then, I'm going to go ask Avatar if she wants to relax with you tonight.

Kana(M): Wait! Aren't you gonna relax with us, too?

Azama: Me? Oh, no no no. I've got some plans with other people in the camp...

Kana(M): But I want to relax and do nothing with both of you! Can't we all relax together?

Azama: Hrmph... Oh, Kana. I guess I have no choice...

Kana(M): Yaaay!

Azama: Staying in as a family, hm? Never thought this would be a thing for me. I suppose Kana isn't the only one who is starting to change.
