Chapter 11: Dandrum Fortress

Chapter 11: Dandrum Fortress

On the World Map

Leaf led his Liberation Army across the border and into Imperial land at last.

However, the impregnable Dandrum Fortress towered before them. They must capture this stronghold to clear the way to Tahra…

Opening Cutscene

Olwen:
“I’m telling you, the fort at Noel Canyon was attacked! General Largo is in danger! He needs reinforcements. Please, General Kempuf! Send out our army to his aid!”

Kempuf:
“You say the fort was attacked, but who exactly are the invaders? What was your mission, Olwen? Surveillance, wasn’t it? You fail to even identify the enemy, and then you come running back demanding for reinforcements? I think not.”

Olwen:
“We were caught off-guard, so we need more men! I decided to come back and report first…”

Kempuf:
“But what if this enemy that you speak of is merely a trap to lure us away from our post? Our 12 Legions are what make Dandrum the impregnable fortress that it is. There is no way I will send out troops without even knowing who the enemy is.”

Olwen:
“But…what about General Largo! He is out there fighting as we speak…!”

Kempuf:
“An aged general or two is no big loss to our army. He would have died some time soon anyway. Now I don’t have to worry about it.”

Olwen:
“Wh-Why, you… General Kempuf! You call yourself…”

Kempuf:
“Eh? What’s this? Are you talking back to me? Surely you know what happens to those who disobey their commanders. And yet you choose to go against me? Hm?”

Olwen:
“Erg…”

Kempuf:
“What’s the matter? Can’t back up what you say?”

Olwen:
“……”

Kempuf:
“Well, you’re just a girl fresh out of the academy. I suppose all you can do is go crying to big brother Rinehart.”

Olwen:
“!! What did you say!”

Kempuf:
“Didn’t you hear? I said, I suppose all you can do is go crying to big brother Rinehart.”

Olwen:
“…You…”

Kempuf:
“Don’t worry, he’ll take good care of you. Why, that man’s greatest skill is seducing the ladies. Hahaha!”

Olwen:
“Are you insulting my brother! You…!”

Kempuf:
“Drawing your sword, are you? What are you going to do, kill me? Stupid bitch. Guards! Throw General Olwen into the dungeon. Her charges are disobedience and turning her blade to her superiors!”

Guard:
“Yes, sir! General Olwen, please come with me.”

Olwen:
“G-General Kempuf…! You vile piece of…”

(Olwen gets taken away)

Kempuf:
“Hmph, finally I’ve gotten that annoying little wench taken care of. Now, if she is executed for revolt, then that Rinehart will lose his position as well. I can’t wait to see his face… Hahaha…”

(Fred appears)

Fred:
“General Kempuf! What is the meaning of this?”

Kempuf:
“Hm? What’s the matter, Fred? Is something wrong?”

Fred:
“You know what’s wrong! What did Lady Olwen do? Punishing troops for personal reasons goes against military laws. Please release her immediately, or else I will take this matter to Queen Ishtar!”

Kempuf:
“Personal reasons? Why, I never. General Olwen drew her blade right here, to kill me.”

Fred:
“What? No… That can’t be…”

Kempuf:
“What did our military code say about turning your blade to your superiors? I recall it meant death, or some other severe punishment…”

Fred:
“…So is that your plan. …Dirty schemer…”

Kempuf:
“Anyway, you will have to take responsibility for your commander’s misbehavior. I order you to go out and meet the enemy. But this is a punishment. Fight to your death. If you dare retreat, Olwen will die. Understood?”

Fred:
“Kempuf! …You shameless bastard!”

Kempuf:
“Hm? What’s that? Can’t hear you. Hahahahaha!”

1st Turn

Kempuf:
“What! The enemy is flying the flag of Lenster? And their leader is a boy of around 14 or 15? Hm… That must be Prince Leaf. …This could be a chance to get myself a promotion. All right, I have a plan. Lure the enemy into the eastern corridor. Everyone, Portcullis! Make sure the enemy doesn’t find out!”

(Note: Portcullis is a plan where you lure the enemy into a corridor trap them inside. Ballistas are then used to rain waves of arrows onto the enemy to kill them off. It’s not the dictionary definition of the word, but IS decided to use it anyway.)

When Leaf enters the central room

Kempuf:
“Hahaha! The idiots have fallen right into my trap! All right, now! Get them!”

Plan Portcullis is activated

Leaf:
“Knight of Freeji, is this your way of battle? When I fought at Noel Canyon, I was impressed by honor of the Freeji Army. Was I wrong?”

Fred:
“Dirty tactics like this are certainly not what the Holy Warrior Tode would approve of. This is all because of that man’s…General Kempuf’s foolishness. I wish to die as an honorable knight. Not in a dirty plan like this.”

Leaf:
“…If you have no more will to fight, then we won’t attack you, either. Neither of us have much more strength to spare.”

Fred:
“Yes… I still have things to do. Very well, let us work together to escape.”

Leaf:
“All right. We’re going to charge the castle, and you can escape to the south. We’ll do something about the door.”

Fred:
“I owe you now… I am Fred, a knight of the Schutaeze family. What is your name?”

Leaf:
“…Leaf, of Lenster.”

Fred:
“Lenster? …Hm…I see… Very well, Lord Leaf. Let us meet again!”

Fighting Fred

Fred:
“What!? You would fight under these circumstances!?”

Defeating Fred

Olwen:
“Olwen… Forgive me… I couldn’t…rescue you…”

Fighting Kempuf

Kempuf:
“Damn! Dandrum is invincible…!”

(The next turn)

Kempuf:
“Damn…this can’t be… …Retreat! I’ll be back…!”

After beating the map

(If Fred is alive and you beat the map in under 30 turns)

August:
“Very impressive. I’m sure the enemy won’t be able to escape if we caputured the place this quickly. However, we must not rest. There are children being held captive here as well. We must kill off the rest of the enemy and rescue the children!”

(If Fred is dead or if you beat the map in over 30 turns)

Dorias:
“Hm, it took longer than I expected, but I suppose it’s better than losing precious troops. This fortress holds no tactical value any more. Let the remaining enemy forces escape, and let’s press on towards Tahra!”
