Fishing

This is a mini-game that you can play by speaking to the Fishkeeper next to the Fishing Pond, towards the south-west of the monastery. You must have completed the “Fresh Catch” quest from Chapter 1 (4th month) or reached Part 2.

Fishing Basics

Fishing costs 0 activity points, but you must supply your own bait. Bait can be obtained randomly by inspecting the glowing blue spots dotted around the monastery. Later on, you can also buy bait from the Eastern Merchant in the Marketplace.

Types of Bait
Name Grade Cost (G)
Insect Larva ★ (1) 10
Pond Snail ★★ (2) 20
Earthworm ★★★ (3) 30
Blowfly ★★★★ (4) 40
Herring Bait ★★★★★ (5) 50
Tournament Bait ★★★ (3)
Flayn’s Bait ★ (1)

The higher the Grade of the bait, the better the fish you can catch.

After selecting your bait, you’ll cast your line and wait for a fish to bite. When a fish bites, two things will happen. There will be a prompt to press the A button. At the same time, a coloured fish shadow will appear where the bottom of your fishing line is. Both of these will appear for a brief moment.

Press the A button within the allocated time limit and you’ll start to pull in the fish. Fail and the fish will slip away. However, you’ll typically have two additional chances for a fish shadow to appear. If you don’t press A before the third fish shadow disappears, you’ll usually lose your bait and must start from the very beginning.

The type of fish shadow will determine what fish you will obtain at the end. So if you’re aiming for a particular fish, you essentially have three attempts to decide on a fish shadow.

Moreover, the fish shadows may change if there’s a special fishing event going on.

Chance of Fish Shadows

Note: Hover over a fish shadow (on a desktop browser etc.) for a description.

Event
Normal Sunday 40% 30% 25% 5%
Fish of Mystery 45% 35% 10% 5% 5%
Golden Fish 40% 30% 20% 10%
Lots of Large Fish 15% 40% 40% 5%

Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, I can’t find any information about strange fish shadows (purple).

Upon pulling a fish, you must repeatedly press the A button when the decreasing circle is within the doughnut-shaped area. Doing so will decrease the fish’s stamina. If you press A when the circle is within the two inner rings, you will score an “Excellent” and decrease the fish’s stamina more than usual.

Your own stamina will also decrease with each button press; it will decrease less if you score an “Excellent”. If you successfully deplete the fish’s stamina, you’ll reel it in; but if you run out of stamina, you’ll lose your bait. As you’d expect, rarer fish shadows have more stamina. Your maximum stamina increases with your Professor Level.

At the end of your hard work, the type of fish you will obtain depends on three factors:

  1. The type of fish shadow.
  2. The Grade of the chosen bait.
  3. If you achieve a “Perfect” catch (every A press resulted in “Excellent”) or not.
