Fishing is an activity that returns from Three Houses. You can fish at the pond after Chapter 8, once Diamant joins.

Initially, you can catch a maximum of 3 fish per Somniel session. This increases to 6 fish once you own the Sturdy Rod and 10 fish once you own the Supreme Rod.

The type of fish you can catch depends on three factors.

• The rod used.
• The time of day.
• Where in the pond you cast your rod.

There are three fishing rods you can use. To begin with, you’re given a Modest Rod, suitable for beginners. After Chapter 16, you can buy an improved Sturdy Rod from the Flea Market. Then a Supreme Rod (best rod) after Chapter 20.

The time of day changes each time the Somniel refreshes (typically after a battle) and also by resting at your bed in My Room. You can check the time of day by opening the + menu.

The pond is divided into 9 positions, arranged in a 3 x 3 grid. Please refer to the diagram above for the rough locations of these positions. As soon as you begin fishing, you’ll be near the top of the bottom-centre position.

On the pond’s surface, there will be several ripples, which give you a vague indication of what size fish are lurking nearby. After casting your rod, nearby fish will touch the lure. When the lure sinks significantly, press A to begin reeling in the fish. If you time it right, you’ll take off 20% of the fish’s HP at the start.

Now the fight begins. The fish will try to move away from you; you must point the control stick in the opposite direction that the fish is moving. If done right, the fish will eventually enter the inner radius. At this point, the fish will be temporarily stunned and you can mash A to lower its HP.

At all times, the fish will slowly regenerate HP every second. Also, you can press A to lower the fish’s HP when it’s outside the inner radius, but it’s not as safe.

When a certain amount of time elapses, the fish’s speed will slightly increase, while its HP regeneration will slightly decrease.

If the fish touches the escape radius for too long, it will get away.

Otherwise, if you reduce the fish’s HP to zero, you can catch it after a quick-time event. You will then receive some materials and bond fragments as rewards. If the fish was a bonus fish, you will earn double the bond fragments.

If you let Sommie assist you, it will help by:

• Giving you a “Perfect” if you press A slightly too late after the fish bites.
• Reducing up to 30% of the fish’s maximum HP (for a total of 50%) at max Bond if you score a “Perfect” at the start.

Caution: Each time you let a fish escape (via the escape radius), Sommie will lose 5 Bond points. Catching a fish merely adds 1 Bond point, so you can easily lose more than you started with!
