Sommie

Sommie is the guardian spirit of the Somniel, found in the Grotto. After completing Chapter 4, you can interact with Sommie at its shrine to build up its bond.

At the shrine itself, you can perform the following actions:

  • Feed – Let Sommie munch on foodstuffs you’ve collected from the Somniel.
  • Pet – Stroke Sommie. Aww, who’s a good Sommie?
  • Dress Up – Change Sommie’s accessory or scarf colour.

The first time you feed or pet Sommie during a Somniel visit, you will receive 100 bond fragments per action (maximum of 200). You will also receive some Bond points for all three actions.

After Sommie has gained a small amount of Bond points, it will leave the shrine and follow you around the Somniel. If you interact with the shrine, Sommie will automatically reappear there.

Increasing Sommie’s Bond

Sommie’s Bond is shown by a circular gauge near the bottom-right corner. It has a maximum value of 100.

You can increase (or decrease) Sommie’s Bond through various actions and inactions.

Action Bond Action Bond
Feed Varies Ignore -5
Pet +5 Lost and didn’t find untested
Dress up +2 Lost and found untested
Follow untested Mini-game success +1
Time passes untested Mini-game failed -5
Food Bond
Apple, Beans, Cabbage, Grapes, Milk, Minced, Fish, Orange, Peach, Pork, Rare Fish, Rare Fruit, Rare Vegetable, Sardines +10
Beef, Berries, Carp, Cod, Dried, Fish, Eel, Herb, Herring, Mutton, Potato, Rice, Sashimi, Tomato, Wheat, Flour +5
Chicken, Eggs, Nuts, Onion, Salmon, Spices +1

As mentioned earlier, the Bond points from feeding, petting and playing dress up only apply for the first time you do them during a Somniel visit. You can obtain a maximum of 17 points through these 3 actions alone, maxing Sommie’s Bond after 6 visits.

The Bond points from mini-games can be repeatedly obtained, but note that there is a cumulative limit of 35 Bond points per visit, for all actions. This limit is added onto the maximum Bond points obtained from the previous visit. Eg. if you got 35 points last visit, you can gain up to 70 in the second visit, then 100 in the third visit.

If you ignore Sommie during a visit (by not interacting with it), it will lose 5 Bond points during the next Somniel refresh.

Benefits of Bonding with Sommie

Besides the cutesy factor, there are gameplay benefits to increasing Sommie’s Bond.

Firstly, based on Sommie’s bond, additional items will spawn at the Somniel upon completion of each non-skirmish or non-network battle.

  • Spirit Gem at Bond 30.
  • Spirit Gem at Bond 60.
  • Rare Fruit, Vegetable or Fish (random) at Bond 80.

These items will appear in semi-random locations. They can also stack (so you can obtain all 3 in one visit).

Also, after reaching 100 points, a new page will be added to the Ally Notebook for Sommie.

Furthermore, you can have Sommie assist you with the various mini-games.

  • Fishing – Sommie will make it slightly easier to achieve a “Perfect” when hooking a fish. Also, when scoring a “Perfect” hook, the fish’s initial HP will be reduced by up to 30% at max Bond (for a total of 50%, when combined with the default HP reduction).

(I haven’t played the other mini-games yet.)

Caution: Failing a mini-game will reduce Sommie’s Bond by 5 points each time. Since you merely earn 1 point by winning a mini-game, you can easily lose more than you started with!
