Vestaria Saga: Kaga Q and As

With all eyes on E3 this week, we’ll just briefly divert the hype train to a humbler station. A week ago, Shouzou Kaga showcased the second trailer for his upcoming pet project, Vestaria Saga I.

Dachua versus Akkord.

Dachua versus Akkord.

Naturally, following the reveal, it appears Kaga has been receiving a lot of questions from fans. Below are some of his responses to common questions, which he collected in this recent blog post.

(Special thanks to Kirokan for helping me with the translations!)

Q) Are there any arenas?

A) I’m afraid not.

Q) Are there ways to grind for experience?

A) Possibly, but you can bet there are limits.

Q) What’s the level cap?

A) 20. After promoting, your level is reset to 1. Some classes cannot promote.

Q) How big is the game?

A) Slightly smaller than Berwick Saga. A typical working person would need 3 months to complete it.

(Editor’s note: Obviously somebody with a lot of free time would be able to complete it far, far quicker.)

Q) How many weapon types are there?

A) Over 200, plus around 100 items.

Q) Number of characters?

A) Around 60 important characters. All have unique face sprites.

Q) Isn’t it hard to distinguish player or enemy units on the field?

A) It should be easy to spot player units because they have unique sprites and animations. Some have not been implemented yet.

Q) Class types?

A) Around 100.

Q) Skills?

A) Around 50 kinds.

Q) Number of maps?

A) A secret.

Q) How many save files?

A) 98, haha.

Q) Can we move save files?

A) Yes, you can freely move and copy between different PCs.

Q) Are there minimum PC specs?

A) To some extent, yes. Otherwise there’s a risk of freezing (and bugs) if the specs are too low.

Q) What about the scale of the story?

A) It’s on par with Berwick Saga. If the dialogue annoys you, you can skip it with the start key.

Q) So this is Part 1 of 2?

A) This time, we could only cover the first half of the story in this game. You will experience the entirety of the first half with this game. We have not decided on the development of the 2nd part yet.

Q) Is there a happy ending?

A) That’s a secret.

Q) Will the story branch in any way?

A) There are numerous character sidequests.

Q) Are there conversations between allies where they get to know each other?

A) There are conversations between partners. You can view them from the list.

Q) Are there any insanely difficult sidequests?

A) Haha, we decided against them for various reasons.

Q) Is Talys a shota (little boy)?

A) No, he’s a gallant young man.

Q) Will there be different facial expressions for characters?

A) Yes, they will have different expressions.

Q) The music’s amazing!

A) It is definitely nice. If a CD comes out, please buy it (sorry for the plug).

Q) Will [Hiroto] Saitoh be composing in the range of 30 songs?

A) There may be more. We’re planning to eventually have 50 songs.

(Editor’s note: Hiroto Saitoh was one of the composers for Berwick Saga. While I believe Kaga has not directly confirmed it before, it seems he is acknowledging that Saitoh is behind Vestara’s music.)

Q) Will there be more music from “Miku”?

A) Probably not. Possibly only in the music from the trailer.
