Still predicting an easy win for Tharja, but willing to be surprised. As for me, Catria is a favorite of mine after SoV, but Katarina is probably also top 10, which leads me to my actual point: why is Katarina in this gauntlet? I’ve played New Mystery, so I have a few guesses, but she still doesn’t seem like the obvious fit the others are…

    • Did you recruit her? That should be a hint.

      • Sisyphe

Yeah, not only do I always recruit her, I usually pump all my stat boosting items into her so I can use her, and I have gotten her A support. I’ve even played as both male and female Chris, though the point about him canonically being male is well taken. I thought that’s was what it was, but I figured I’d confirm because I have mixed feelings about that relationship and because I’ve only played the game translated

        • I tried using her a bit in hard but it was futile. Even more so in lunatic. The translation is fairly identical to the original too. But yeah, they don’t have a paired ending iirc, but to me it was quite clear that she liked him.

          • Sisyphe

Man, a paired ending would have been so great. But no, there isn’t one. I wish they’d do more paired endings. It would allow them to keep the pairing aspect without being as ridiculous (like we could see more stuff like AmeliaxDuessel and JoshuaxGerik paired endings)

          • That’s also one of the reasons I hate how FE13 handled supports. They all felt slapped on and not genuine at all since everyone was capable of supporting everyone pretty much. Always did prefer when it wasn’t all over the place. Though not my favourite, Harken&Vaida is still as sad to this day..

          • Sisyphe

On the one hand, I can appreciate wanting everyone to be able to talk to everyone, but of course this makes it difficult for the writers, and I by no means think that every support has to end romantically. Alternatively, one could say that not all people can form bonds with all people, so it’s fine to only have a handful of supports. Ultimately, I think quality matters most to me. I felt Echoes had mostly too few supports, because when they were good, they were really good, but even so not all of them did it for me. I also think I really appreciate paired endings, but again, they need not be romantic. You could assume that nothing terribly substantial came of Harken and Vaida’s conversation for instance (not that it wasn’t meaningful), because there wasn’t a paired ending for them in a game that used paired endings, so they serve that purpose as well.

          • You sure? I want to remember those two having a paired one (FE7) but I could be mistaken, it’s been years since I last replayed that particular game.

SoV had a good idea by making it map based again, and limiting the amount of conversations, making it feel a bit like the GBA games. However, nothing can top the GBA games in quality for me. It’s true that they weren’t all amazing, but it was a step up from FE13/14 for sure. You also have to keep in mind that the localization team also has a say in what goes through as well. That’s what broke the aforementioned games too. So some releases may be more akin to the intended experience, while others are changed. That’s also why FE12 base convos are great, because the translations are pretty damn literal to how it was originally.

          • Sisyphe

You are right actually. They do. Shows what I remember…In fact there are a number from those games I don’t remember, apparently. I remember the supports in Path of Radiance particularly positively (I’m due to play that again), but in any case map based, and without a limit, is definitely preferable.

    • Zog58

Yeah, she’s in love with Chris (MU), who’s canonically male. During their A support she even tries and fails to confess to him.

      • . (Omega)

Yup. I ship her with Kris a lot. Also, she didn’t try to confess. She was practicing her confession.

        • Zog58

Ah yeah, my mistake. And yeah, I don’t even ship much but I strongly approve of that coupling too! Kris is probably my favorite Avatar, for several reasons.

          • . (Omega)

Robin is my favorite, but Kris is okay. Only wish he hadn’t hurt Marth’s character as much as he did.

          • Zog58

Yeah that’s fair, at least FE 12 still gave Marth way more character than 11 ever did.

          • . (Omega)

… No. FE11 is actually what gave Marth more character. Here’s a link to someone that summarized how well Marth was written in FE11.
            https://www.reddit.com/r/fireemblem/comments/4fipdc/character_discussion_fe131112_marth/d296jyr/

          • Zog58

Wow yeah haven’t read FE11 dialogue in a while, that was a good analysis. Tbh I thought Kris was fine ASIDE from the whole ending dialogue. It’s not like Medeus can be killed well without Marth in FE12 Lunatic, that’s for sure. Kris was very useful and a loyal knight, but Marth was the leader who won the war. And they take that away from him in the dialogue. So I get what you mean about FE 12 Marth now.

          • . (Omega)

For me, Kris worked fine in regards to Katarina and the prologue more or less. But he really should not have had that much of a story role that it felt like Marth was depending so much on him.
Here’s the same guy that praised FE11 Marth ranting about Kris, and you’ll see the issue:

          • Zog58

Out of curiosity, was this the same guy who also wrote about how Michalis should have stayed dead and his recruitment in FE12 destroyed his character? Granted, everyone does have an opinion, so it’s not my place to judge. I still enjoyed Kris, and at least found his/her overpowered strength to spring from a realistic source, strong family devotion and an entire lifetime spent preparing to serve their lord.

          • . (Omega)

I have no idea. I was just looking online and saw those parts out of curiosity, and this made me appreciate Marth more, and realize how Kris does feel like he hurt other characters. Though Kris was a supporting character, he was treated way too special to make the player feel good about themselves.

          • Zog58

I personally always try to judge the avatars as their own character rather than myself, which is something I can tell a lot of other veterans do too. Hopefully FE Switch decides to try to make the Avatar a customizable UNIT, rather than a customizable character (Kris and Robin having every class was a decent attempt at this, but Corrin was too biased towards a physical sword build because of Yato.) Give the player total dialogue input (like Mass Effect), or no input at all. That way they don’t keep ruining the somewhat decent ideas that each Avatar have been (yes, even Corrin would have been decent to me then). Just my opinion though.

          • . (Omega)

I personally feel Robin was the best Avatar to me. And Corrin’s issue is that they focused even harder on making him feel special, making him dragon, legendary sword user, ultimate hero, etc. His character is one of the many flaws of Fates’ story.

          • Zog58

Yeah Corrin didn’t work well at all. Personally, if they had given us even some “memory scenes” of Robin’s past, even delved into his tactical studies under Validar, etc., Robin would be my favorite too. But they just….left so much out at the end of Awakening to hasten the plot towards the end. Robin could have been so much more, but they used the amnesia for too long and took away a backstory that would have been very interesting.

          • . (Omega)

I have fanfic for Robin’s past, or currently his mother’s past. But Robin was actually taken by his mother when he was still an infant, so he never learned anything from Validar.
And there’s a reason why you felt Robin was lacking. Because Awakening was something that was rushed. Three arcs that could very well have been their own games ended up being a single game, especially a game that was intended to be a mass Fire Emblem reference game.

          • Zog58

So the real question is…. how the heck did Robin learn magic, tactics, and swordplay without a SINGLE notable or mentioned teacher? His mother maybe? Even Corrin’s swordplay came from somewhere, because Xander trained them whenever possible.

          • . (Omega)

I have an idea of a fanfic on how Robin learned all the things taht he did.

      • lol, here I try to be as ambiguous as possible with it and you just went out and said it. well, whatever, since he ended up having recruited her anyway it doesn’t really matter.

        • Zog58

Yeah, subtlety was never one of my strong suits lol.

    • . (Omega)

      I’m gonna go with Sigurd.

      • Sisyphe

Yeah I think Catria and Katarina are going to get routed regardless, so it doesn’t really matter who I pick

        • . (Omega)

I like Katarina too, and she’d have been my second choice, because of how I liked her story in New Mystery. Sigurd gets my vote cause he’s my best sword unit due to his tankiness to both physical and magical attacks, while still hitting hard as well. He’s helped me so much that I have to stick with him.

  • Zog58

Pulled the one green orb on the Dorcas banner and got… Hector. My first one too. That was lucky!

  • . (Omega)

Went for the green to try and get Rhajat, and got… Julia. Finally got that girl.

  • mrkisukes

Tharja is a usual contender for winning with her popularity, Sigurd has a chance on the basis of being such an OP unit, and Dorcas has meme power. The others don’t really stand a chance without the losing modifier. People generally hate Faye, Rhajat was added in instead of Ophelia, so a lot of people are butt-hurt about that, Priscilla is a healer, and Catria and Katarina are from the games no one played.

    • I played Shadow Dragon. Not the original, but the remake, and the Whitewings are also in Gaiden/SoV. Catria’s the only one on here I would even vote for anyways, though really Palla should have also been on here.

      • Sisyphe

I’d like to think most of the community played SoV and a New Mystery (I hope very few of them have played Shadow Dragon…). Catria and the rest of the Whitewings jumped pretty much into my top 10 favorite FE characters after SoV, though I vastly prefer her art there to here. Same with the other two actually. I think Palla and Est are great, but I don’t love their art in Heroes either. I agree that I prefer Palla’s case for “enduring love” to Catria’s. But regardless, Tharja will probably win

        • mrkisukes

Most of the hard core FE community has, but we’re a small minority when it comes to those who play FE games, but we’re probably also not proportionately as small in the FE Heroes player base to the newer or more casual players so predictions on who’ll win are not as simple as determining who’s the most popular.

Either way, I mainly find it odd that Priscilla was included in the voting Gauntlet, since everyone else falls under romantic feelings for their ‘enduring love’ while Priscilla’s wasn’t that way with Raven (at least that’s the impression I got from the English ver, maybe it’s different in Japanese). Though at the same time I still find some of the choices odd in that they seemed more like crushes than cases for ‘enduring love.’ Dorcas and Sigurd are obvious as it refers to their spouses, Tharja and Rhajat are obsessed with the Avatars, and Faye is the Tharja of Echoes. But after that it seems like IntSys ran out of ideas for cases of ‘enduring love,’ didn’t want to stick Camilla or Cordelia in, and went with the next closest thing. But then why not someone like Nino or Jaffar?

          • Sisyphe

Catria is a fair choice in that her unrequited love for Marth is pretty well documented, by which I mean, we’re told it’s a thing without any explanation or justification. But she seems like a weird choice because unlike Tharja or Faye, they actually made Catria a complete character in addition to her thing for March. There was an incest thing implied in Priscilla’s affection for Raven, though I suppose the gauntlet could merely mean any kind of love (in which case there would be far better options than who they chose). I’ve already mentioned elsewhere that something about Katarina’s selection was a little off to me, perhaps because her affection for Chris was underdeveloped. Jaffar would have been a great choice honestly, and off the top of my head, Titania would arguably make more sense too. I’m sure there are plenty of others

    • Diovani Estivalet

Well… Shanna won the last one. Anything can happen!

  • O.H. X-1990

Oh great, it’s the Battle of the Stalkers, including Tharja, the winner of the Battle of the Mages, Priscilla, the runner-up of The War of the Clerics, and Katarina, the girl who lost in the first round of Short-Haired Ladies vs. Long-Haired Gents. I hope this Voting Gauntlet is not as rigged as that last one, I lost 3 matches in a row for crying out loud!

  • While we’re here, can I point out they’re pulling the exact same stunt with Rhajat that they did with Ayra, or does the fact that Rhajat’s nowhere near as powercreepy as Ayra mean I’m not allowed to complain this time?

    • JC

Well, in their defence, I think they at least learned their lesson a little bit. They featured her in the video this time, which they didn’t with Ayra (they just ignored the fact that we could see her sprite), and they also announced that Rahajat would be appearing on a separate banner, which they also didn’t do last time. She’s also appearing -before- the main banner rather than after, which isn’t quite as bad because there’s now no excuse of ‘I used my orbs on the main banner and then they dropped an extra ‘secret’ character after we used all of our orbs’.

Is it still a pretty shady thing to do? Yes. Do I wish they would stop doing that, especailly since there’s plenty of precedent for a four-person banner rather than 3? Also yes. But I think they at least learned -a- lesson, if not not -the- lesson: i.e., that they shouldn’t do this. (At the very least, putting maybe Soleil rather than Rahajat on the separate banner would have given one of each colour for the main banner, which would have been nice rather than competing Reds, a blue, and no greens, which is what we now get)

      • CombatMagi

However if they had switched than you’d have Soleil and Tharja competing for reds on the same banner and honestly that was one of the bigger problems with Ayra since she was alongside Eldigan. This way its at least Rhajat is the only green focus summon. Is it going to stink if your trying to pull Soleil and you get Siegbert instead (or visa versa) sure but at least they are new characters all around. As you said doesn’t completely solve the problem but it seems they have learned a lesson. Also this was probably only me but each circle had at least 1 green, usually more though.

        • JC

Hmm…a fair point re: subbing out Rahajat vs. Soleil and the other problems that would then cause. I guess this is the best we can hope for at this point since it seems this is IS’s way of saying ‘we are still going to do this, but at least we’ll give you some warning when we do’.

(PS- yes, my fears of getting Soleil when hoping for Siegbert were warranted, as that’s exactly what happened to me today. But I got her after only three orbs, she’s +SPD/-RES, and I still have plenty of time to try again for the two princes, so I shouldn’t really complain too much!)

          • CombatMagi

Yeah I got Soleil after like 50 as she was my focus nothing against Siegbert or Shiro just preferred her character over them in fates, also gives me a decent person to give my spare Brave Sword+ to. Wish I had gotten your build though, mine was +ATK/-RES so still a very nice build just maybe not the best for Brave Sword
