Fire Emblem 2016 Retrospective

2016 is soon coming to an end. As we prepare to welcome the new year and hope that it brings with it new joy, let’s take a moment to reflect on the events of this year.

For those of in the West, this year was probably the closest we’ll get to a “Year of Fire Emblem”; for Japan, that was 2015, which coincided with the series’s 25th anniversary.

Not only was there a major release with Fire Emblem Fates, which itself could be considered three games in one, 2016 also saw the release of spin-off Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE.

While 2016 wasn’t without a few bumps and tumbles, it was undoubtedly a fantastic year to be a Fire Emblem fan.

New Manga Starring Leo from Fire Emblem Fates

When one door closes, another door opens. Just yesterday, it was revealed that the Fire Emblem Fates manga by Yusuke Kozaki wouldn’t be coming to fruition (or at least, not in the near future)

Perhaps Mr. Kozaki was teasing us at the same time, because a new Fire Emblem Fates manga has just been announced in the latest volume of Monthly Zero Sum, although it will be illustrated by Tama Yugyoji instead.

Titled “Fire Emblem Fates: The Crown of Nibelungen”, this manga adaptation is set to focus on Leo, the youngest Nohrian prince–and one of the most popular Fates characters in Japan.

It will debut in the March edition of Monthly Zero Sum, which hits bookshelves on 28th January 2017 (in Japan).

Fire Emblem Fates Manga Suspended

This should come as no surprise to anyone, but the Fire Emblem Fates manga subtly announced back in July 2015 has been subtly put on hold or outright cancelled.

Few details were known about the manga, except that Yusuke Kozaki and Shin Kibayashi–the artist and story director for Fates respectively–would be teaming up and that the manga would be debuting before the end of 2015.

However after that window passed and there was no more news about the manga, it became clear that it probably wasn’t going to happen. Perhaps the announcement was merely a figment of our imagination? Not quite.

In a recent tweet, Mr. Kozaki confessed that the plans for the manga are currently on hold, for reasons undisclosed.

Regarding the Fire Emblem manga, due to various circumstances, right now the plans have essentially been suspended. Everyone who was looking forward to it, we are deeply sorry. Personally speaking, I would like to draw FE as a manga one way or another.

While it’s not 100% clear from the wording whether the manga is still happening or not, from the way Mr. Kozaki ends the tweet, it does sound like it’s not going to happen any time soon…
