Fire Emblem if Nintendo Direct 31st May: My Castle and Amiibos

Nintendo of Japan certainly know how to pick a strange day for a new Nintendo Direct: on a Sunday, a day before June and just weeks away from E3 (and with me conveniently away at the Pokemon VGC UK Nationals, in case you’re wondering why this news post is so late).

Today’s Japan-only Direct focused on upcoming Summer 3DS and Wii U games and, Fire Emblem if, being a Summer title (it comes out on 25th June in case you didn’t know or forgot) was naturally featured.

To begin with, the Fire Emblem if portion of the Direct introduced a brand new key feature known as My Castle. This is the player’s base of operations; a castle town that serves as a hub for interacting with characters and accessing facilities, similar to the world map in Awakening.

The first thing you may notice is that you–the Avatar–can freely walk around on the map, like in a traditional RPG (or inside the villages of Fire Emblem Gaiden).

Fire Emblem if has Amiibo support + HQ Boxarts

When we weren’t looking, Nintendo of Japan sneakily updated the Fire Emblem if boxarts to add two things.

As is becoming the trend with new first-party titles, Fire Emblem if will support Amiibos (Nintendo’s NFC figures), as indicated by the Amiibo logo in the most top-right corner.

At this early stage, it’s not clear what exactly the Amiibo functionality will be, but hopefully the Fire Emblem Amiibos–Marth, Ike, Robin and Lucina–will add something interesting to the game.

For reference, the game already features DLC characters, unlocked with download codes from special Fire Emblem Cipher TCG packs. So it’s not a stretch that additional DLC characters could be unlocked with Amiibos.

Side Announcements

In addition to the new game reveal yesterday, there were additional Fire Emblem-related announcements in the January Nintendo Direct.

Firstly, in the Japanese version of the Direct, Iwata revealed that a new version of the Fire Emblem: Trading Card Game will be releasing in Summer alongside Fire Emblem If.

Characters shown include Marth (illustrated by Daisuke Izuka), Caeda and Tharja. On the official Fire Emblem World site, you can find a card of Wrys too.

Secondly, Code Name S.T.E.A.M., a new strategy game also developed by Intelligent Systems, will be compatible with Fire Emblem Amiibos such as Marth, Ike, Lucina and Robin. By scanning in one of these Amiibos, you can play as the corresponding Fire Emblem hero.

Lastly, if you didn’t manage to buy a Marth Amiibo when it was first launched, you’re in luck as more stock will be arriving later in the year, in North America at least.

Ike Amiibo and new look at Marth figma

It’s all about the figures this week, it seems.

The first wave of Amiibos isn’t even out yet, but Nintendo is already teasing the third wave, which will be released in early 2015. This is when Ike joins Marth on the plastic battlefield. Hopefully Robin and Lucina aren’t too far away…

Speaking of which, Kahotan from Good Smile Company teased the Masked Marth figma during their November broadcast. You can find pictures in this topic, showcasing the alternate features. (Spoiler warning for anyone who still hasn’t played Awakening)
