Three Houses: Final(?) Famitsu Preview (Recap, Early-game Guide & Interview)

Famitsu has shared a preview of their next–and biggest–Three Houses article, from their 8th & 15th August 2019 issue, which comes out on 25th July (in a couple of hours). They’ll be re-introducing the game’s key features, going over some of the early-game maps and there’s also an interview with directors Genki Yokota and Toshiyuki Kusakihara.

On top of that, the front cover for the magazine features a brand new illustration of the two protagonists (whoa, isn’t that impossible?) with all the students. Many thanks to Mapina-089 from Reddit for sharing! It’d be nice if they released a non-obscured version of it later…

Above are two tiny preview images from the article. The left one introduces the monastery occupants and the Black Eagles. I don’t think you should expect any new info from this, since it looks like it’s from the recap (they need to make up the 40 page count somehow!). Meanwhile, the right one is from the interview.

With the game arriving very soon–or in the case of some lucky or sneaky people, already arrived–we probably won’t focus on this Famitsu issue too much. I guess it’ll be nice to look at some of the maps and, of course, the interview should be interesting once it’s translated. But we’ll probably continue working on compiling the game data.

Three Houses: Famitsu Scores the Game 37/40 & Writer Play Reviews

Today, the latest issue of Famitsu was released. The big news is that the magazine gave Three Houses a score of 37/40 [9, ,9, 10, 9]. At the time of writing, the review text is not available, but to be honest it’s rarely important. (Source)

This puts the game as one of the highest scoring FE titles, on par with Echoes, and one point above Mystery of the Emblem, Binding Blade, Awakening and Fates. Of course, if you’re dubious about Famitsu’s reviewing credibility, you have every right to be.

Correction: My brain wasn’t functioning properly for some reason. Three Houses scored higher, not lower than the five four games I mentioned.

In other related news, the new issue of Famitsu also includes a special pre-launch feature for the game. There are 8 pages of summarised information from previous issues of Famitsu (aka nothing new), plus play reports from three of Famitsu’s writers. You can find translations of the latter below.

The Writers

  • Lipsaiton — Played nearly every FE game. Picked the Black Eagles.
  • Professor Tsutsumi — Has been a decade since they last played a FE. Picked the Blue Lions.
  • Godzilla Outa — Completely new to the series. Picked the Golden Deer.

You can really taste the flavour and charm of “FE” in this game!

I’m Lipsaiton, a writer who’s been playing the FE series since the very first game. If you ask me about my gameplay impressions, I feel like the game system has undergone a big change, but the core flavour and charm of the series remains the same.

For this title, from the way the characters heads turn, the visuals have become more realistic. The game system, specifically the way you raise characters has been greatly enhanced. Mechanics, like the way units fight while leading battalions, are really innovative. Since FE Fates, the appearance and game system has changed a lot; could it even still be considered the same kind of game? I thought about this and there are probably many series fans thinking the same. But in the end, these concerns will probably end up being swept away.

Three Houses: Famitsu Preview (Pre-launch Summary and Writer Reviews)

Normally, we’d have to wait 2 or 3 weeks for our next Famitsu article, but not this time! Today, Famitsu posted a preview of their Three Houses pre-launch special, which will appear in the 1st August 2019 issue, releasing on 18th July.

Two preview images were included. The first one suggests that the article will mainly be a summary and recap of everything we’ve learned in the previous 5 articles. There’s a blurb about the story, profiles for male and female Byleth and screenshots from a battle and the academy. Basically, all stuff we’ve seen before.

Famitsu often includes these kinds of summaries right before a game launches for two reasons. Firstly, it’s useful for readers who haven’t been following every single article–and especially those who haven’t read a single one. Secondly, it’s so they don’t have to write anything new. Win-win! That said, they do like to sprinkle in some new screenshots and tidbits.

The second preview image might be more of interest. Unfortunately this image is small and blurry, because it’s actually half the size. From the description, it features “play reviews” from Famitsu’s writer(s). It seems there’s one for each house. To be honest, they’ll probably be more useful than the standard Famitsu reviews, which are like two or three sentences.

Three Houses: Famitsu 5th Article Follow Up (Better Screenshots, Library Texts)

Famitsu has posted the online version of their 5th article for Three Houses. The information there is exactly the same, but there are better (and slightly more) screenshots. If you haven’t read it already, we suggest checking out our earlier article for the full details.

Here’s a better look at three of the Demonic Beasts you may encounter in the game. They’re known as the Giant Wolf, Giant Bird and, breaking the mold, the King of Beasts. We’ve also seen a Giant Worm/Bug and the Black Beast.

Speaking of, here’s the Black Beast in all its glory. This map seems to be from the same map we saw towards the end of the Nintendo Direct trailer. Thanks to recent info, we can assume this map is the end-of-month mission for the 8th month, the Gautier Inheritance.
