Fire Emblem 2020 Retrospective

As the curtains fall on 2020, here’s a look back at the key Fire Emblem happenings this year.

Disclaimer: This isn’t meant to be an objective review of the year, but the author’s personal take on things.

Before we dive into things, overall, 2020 has been an unprecedented year. For many, I imagine it was a challenging year. The impact of coronavirus across the world cannot be understated–and it’s possible it’ll have a lasting influence for years to come.

There’s a small part of me that wanted to skip this year’s retrospective, but despite everything, there have been some good things–and I don’t want to pretend nothing happened.

For better or worse, Fire Emblem first made the headlines in 2020 with the announcement of Byleth as the 5th DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The reveal was made during a presentation on 16th January; Byleth him/herself would be available from 29th January. Since I don’t play Smash, I didn’t really pay attention to the comments at the time, but I could still imagine them…

Given the success of Three Houses and Sakurai’s admiration of the Fire Emblem series, it was almost a given that Smash would eventually get a Three Houses rep. Personally, I would’ve been more excited if it was somebody like Edelgard, to avoid yet another sword-wielder. But presumably Nintendo didn’t want to favour one particular house over another–and hence we got the neutral Byleth with all their relics.

Following that, concrete details for Three Houses’s final wave of DLC were unveiled. This was the moment we officially became acquainted with the members of the Ashen Wolves, whose story would be told in “Cindered Shadows” (previously, we knew some details via data-mining). The final DLC arrived on 13th February and thus concluded the tale of Three Houses.

On 17th January, the Switch port of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE was released. The original game was developed for the Wii U back in 2015, as part of the Fire Emblem x Shin Megami Tensei project. Back then, a lot of people were put off from trying the game and the Wii U’s lack of popularity didn’t help matters either. So this was a good chance for a new generation to discover and appreciate it.

Heroes: Fairies and Beasts Bring Good Fortune in “New Year: ω Special Heroes”!

Keeping with tradition, to celebrate the coming New Year, more Kimono-clad Special Heroes will be arriving soon to Fire Emblem Heroes! The New Year: ω Special Heroes banner will be running from 1st January to 1st February 2021 (UTC).

Note: You can check out the Japanese version of this trailer here.

Similar to previous years, the Special Heroes include some of the original characters from the just-finished Book IV, in addition to some lucky Beast characters. The line up is: Plumeria, Velouria, Kaden and Duo Peony (and Triandra).

To mix things up, the banner will also feature 4 Special Heroes from last year’s Renewed Spirits banner: Anna, Selkie, Lethe and Duo Alfonse. The combined focus 5-star rate will be set to 6%, while the non-focus 5-star rate is 2%. Also, Kaden can be summoned as a 4-star focus Hero.

On top of that, Keaton: Resolved Wolfskin will be available via the upcoming Tempest Trials++ event.

Update: Hot off the presses, there will be a gift of 5 First Summon Tickets applicable for this banner. More details will be shared later on.

Heroes: Resplendent Eldigan Inbound & Christmas Gift from Hilda!

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holidays! Over in Fire Emblem Heroes, Resplendent Delthea is now available for FEH Pass subscribers. Also, the next Resplendent Hero will be Eldigan: Lionheart.

This version of the King of Nordion is wearing attire based on Hel, the realm of the dead. He’ll be available starting from 10th January 2021. Feel free to check out his official webpage for voice samples and more lavish artwork!

Earlier, Hilda from Three Houses briefly took over the official FEH Twitter account, while Feh was snoozing for days (I’m still convinced she’s overworked). During that time, users could request a greeting card from Sothis, Bernadetta, Felix or herself (links via Reddit).

Before she left, Hilda graciously handed out a Christmas gift for all players: 3 First Summon Tickets for the Legendary Lilina banner, 3 for the Glorious Gifts re-run and another 3 for the Gifts of Winter re-run (for a total of 9 tickets).

These can be claimed until 1st January 2021.

Heroes: Legendary Lilina trailer drops, Banner hits on 12/24 & 11p PT

As several Summoners have probably assumed by now, Lilina was due to receive a Legendary alt version, and it’s about time that she finally came to heat things up.

Lilina herself doesn’t come with any groundbreaking inheritable passive skills, but her weapon turbo-charges her special cooldown, and her unique and mighty Special, Gifted Magic, is similar to a pre-battle AoE attack much like her original form’s Growing Flame special, but in the shape of a plus (+), targeting foes one position adjacent to the target, and unlike others of its kind, only has a 2 action cooldown.

As with all Legendary Hero banners preceding this one, there will be an 8% summoning focus on our Legendary Hero of choice, plus enough to fill three within each color type. Those heroes include:

  • Blue
    • Dimitri [Brave]
    • Peony
    • Gatrie
  • Colorless
    • Bramimond
    • Claude [Brave]
    • Duma
  • Green
    • Edelgard [Legendary]
    • Jill
    • Plumeria
  • Red
    • Celica [Legendary]
    • Reginn

Legendary Hero Lilina: Firelight Leader and her Banner will be available from December 24 to January 3 (all at 11p PT).
